Kenny Solomon is the first South African to become a Grandmaster at chess. This is a great accomplishment and an inspiration to the whole country. It gives the game exposure and attracts many new young players who would like to follow in his footsteps. Even to me, who am a pretty average player, it awakens my imagination to the endless possibilities of chess and makes the game come alive once more. We will be following the careers of him and players like him closely in future, and who knows, maybe we will even have a World Champion one day. There is nothing like the sense of accomplishment that one feels when one has climbed Everest and has reached to pinnacle of one’s sport. We can certainly say that he has done South Africa proud and wish him all the best for the future. May ‘the Force’ be with you!
