The elephant baby walked with his mum
In the shade of her great, big elephant bum.
When she swayed to the left, he swayed there too.
His down was green and his up was blue.
He blinked at horizons dizzy with heat
and felt all of Africa under his feet.
With baggy grey trousers and bouncing skin,
he put two feet out and two feet in.
He had laughing eyes and a laughing face,
with high-flying ears and a comical grace.
Who could not love him, soon to be king?
He put four legs out and started to sing.
His land was green and his canopy blue.
As they walked to the river, he walked there too.
Into the caravan, sweet and absurd,
Outside Elephant followed the herd.
