Desert Island Books (Apologies to Roy Plumley)

Just to lighten things up a bit..

You are on a desert island.
You get one copy of the Bible/Koran/Vedas/Upanishads/
Manusmriti/holy book of your choice.

You may also bring 5 books, one music album and one luxury item.

What are they and why?

To kick off;

Double Indemnity - James M Cain.
The best story about a dangerous woman and an infatuated man period. Love the whole genre and period.

Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte.
Incredibly modern it its underlying message and brilliantly told. Makes me feel good.

Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth
Very, very funny and explicit. Because I will need a laugh on my lonely island.

The Old Man and The Sea - Ernest Hemingway.
Brilliant despite the religious undertone. When I complain too much this book will make me humble.

Starman Jones - Robert Heinlein
Young adventurer seeks the stars. As a teenager this completely enthralled me. It will remind me of being young.

Beatles - White Album
It's just impossible to pick one really but I love this for its varied tracks.

Luxury Item - Pen & paper what else!

Considering I have read all those holy books, that might be a very tough choice. I tend to think of them as a set :) Lets see... The other five An excellent set of encyclopedias A set of medical diagnostics ( those 2 will suffice ) A cd of tribal music ( Indian , African , Celtic, and such ) and of course pen, and paper ! lol
Sorry MaggieG - no sets individual books only!
well darn you ! That ain't fair lol
FTSE100 typically esoteric I like it.
I suppose Proust in large print would make do as a raft or a house or something. And perhaps Dan Brown for the privvy. Rob

OK, I'd like to be marooned with: Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte, Same as you WWJ! My all time favourite love story. Notes on a Scandal - Zoe Heller, Love, love, love anything by Zoe Heller. Ann Veronica - H.G. Wells, One of my favourite ever literary heroines. The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown, Sorry, but it's a guilty pleasure of mine. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone -J.K.Rowling, Clinging to my childhood! The one album is a toughy... Either Bruce Springsteen's Greatest Hits or any Queen album. Luxury item - I'm guessing my laptop isn't really playing fair, so I'll go with my journal. Magic xxx
