In the Beginning

Let's take it back to the beginningIn oh yeah
When there was no history and death was no mystery.
What we now call sunset and dawn were as coincidental as breath.
Then somebody figured out there was a pattern involving darkness and light.
This pattern marked the beginning of time.
With each generation, the pattern not yet known as time, became ever more detailed.
Soon someone stumbled upon the concept of numbers.
Someone else came up with the idea of matching numbers to the pattern.
With each generation, the matching numbers more fully and accurately described the pattern.
Someone came up with the idea of using an instrument to record the numbers of the pattern and how they matched the surrounding phenomena of coincidence.
They called the pattern what we now call "time".
As language developed every region had their own word for the pattern.
The regions that were most accurate in first measuring then keeping track of the pattern known as time took a giant step forward. As those regions stepped forward, humans within those regions kept refining the measuring devices. As the devices became more advanced, civilization began.
Time had arrived.
Death had become a bigger mystery as measurements of time began to be called history.
Timepieces were invented.
With each generation, the timepieces became smaller and smaller until almost everyone carried some type of time piece. Individuals could gather at a specific time and place. These gatherings came to be called meetings.
Not only did the people in the meetings know when the gatherings would begin, they knew when they would end. They also knew how much time had passed from the beginning to the end of the meeting.
Death became even more mysterious as these timekeepers began to realize that there existed a parallel between gatherings and existence.
Existence was one big gathering called life. Life could be measured in terms of time. Just as in the individual meetings, existence could be measured in terms of time from the beginning of the meeting known as life til the end of the meeting called death.
We all know when our meeting began but we dont know when it's going to end.
Death seemed to be beyond time and thus beyond reason and thus a mystery.
As life went on, timepieces became more and more accurate as further patterns were discovered and established.
Coincidence started to decline.
At one point, near the beginning, coincidence was omnipresent.
Coincidence declined to the point that it was rare enough to be given another name.
Coincidence became known as luck.
Awareness of the patterns of life became known as intelligence.
The way every individual blended luck and intelligence became known as personality.
As people began to link the fortunes of their family with levels of luck, intelligence and personality, the concept of "success" began.
Time pieces now had a different name.
Today, my wife bought a new timepiece. She called it a "watch".
I understood that her watch had the function of measuring hours, minutes and seconds as well as a myriad of other patterns.
Still the most importand of those measurement is the established pattern known as time.
Time is money. Money is success.
Success is determined by the interplay of family, luck, intelligence and personality
The noun called "timepiece" had changed into a noun that is a verb.
That noun/verb is "watch".
We "watch" our timepieces to measure how quickly time passes.
We watch our watches. We have so much to do and so little time to do it.
Every time we look at our watch, we get the sense that our life is moving towards our death and it is moving too quickly as we are runnig out of time to succeed.
Time doesn't walk.
Time flies.

I guess watches are in
I guess watches are in decline. But perhaps with variants of the iWatch and watches that measure pulse and footfall they're making a bit of a come back. But phones have superceded watches (and cameras and everything else like conversation).
