It's hard to be at your best when under sterotypical suspicion.
Ask Ray Davies
Everybody knows the song "You Really Got Me" and deservedly so.
When they were recording the song, however, the producers of the recording observing a group of long haired guys named the "Kinks" became concerned that the song was about irresistible "homosexual" compulsions.
The Kinks themselves became aware of the suspicions of the people in the studio and sensitivities produced tentative delivery.
They kept running through the song and not quite getting it right until a stroke of fortune/genius/frustration/humor on the final run through of the number which was their last shot in the studio
Realizing that heterosexual, irresistible compulsion was A-Okay in the day, Ray simply said the noun "girl" as the first word and that simple syllable spontaneously clarified the song and relaxed the band so that they could complete the recording.
They really got us.
Thus established heterosexually, the Kinks were able to create Lola apparently without producing suspicion.
And the rest is history.
