I've Seen Exit Signs

I’ve seen exit signs everywhere
From San Francisco to Shanghai
And they all blaze the same way
Sometimes red like that blood you see
In Italian horror films
But more often green like that blood you see
In Italian horror films
Outside you’ll see them before you go inside
And then when it’s time you’ll find them
Again with sombre light at the end
I’ve seen exit signs that appear perniciously
In meetings where the coffee is corrupt
And the company too
The managers – they know it and they don’t
Or they let on they don’t and they do
Depart at entry level
Before the shudder feeds back
I’ve seen the signs when I never asked
Overhead on the way home
Dreaded terrestrial distractions
Do others see them too?
I’m sure they do but right now
They’re not looking up
To where prophecies suspend
The deadends
I’ve seen exit signs and she’s seen them too
When everything’s due and the doors are closed
Whoever said what was said
Should do the dishes and shut the hell up
Even the nimble nod off on the bus
And miss the right turnstile
I’m not blind though I always find
Oversight found me on the last mile
