The Whale and The Dolphin
By Baker Street
The whale and the dolphin were out frolicking in the waves one day when they started to have an argument about who was the most magnificent creature of the sea. “I am the strongest!” said the whale. “I am the most intelligent!” boasted the dolphin. “On the contrary,” said the whale “I am the strongest, most intelligent and most beautiful of all sea creatures!” An albatross flew overhead and heard the affair. “If you would like to,” said the albatross “We could hold a contest out in the bay, and I will be the judge in front of all the schools of fishes, and the council of sharks, as to who is the most magnificent of all!” They both agreed to this proposal and they headed out for the bay where the contest was to be held.
The schools of fish and the council of sharks had gathered, with the albatross sitting high up above on a rock overlooking the bay. The first test was strength and they collected a piece of old rope from the beach with which to have a tug-of-war between the dolphin and the whale. The dolphin called for more numbers for he was small compared to the whale. “Six dolphins can tug against one whale to make the odds more fare,” declared the albatross. The tug-of-war began and it was soon apparent despite a vain and valiant attempt from the dolphins what the outcome would be. The whale dragged the dolphins on the rope behind him in his wake and was soon declared the winner of that particular contest.
“I told you I was the strongest!” said the whale with a laugh. The next test was intelligence and the albatross wanted to know what tricks they both possessed. First the whale was to display his so he swam out into the bay. Once in the middle of the water he proceeded to blow a huge spout of water up into the air like a fountain, from his huge blow-hole. The crowd was quite impressed and cheered! Now it was the dolphin’s turn. He went out into the breakers of the bay and started to surf them in a majestic flow of fluid movement. He jumped out of the water as he rode the waves and he was a beautiful sight to see, how majesty conquered the sea and the waves. When he was done the albatross conferred with the fish and the sharks and then made his announcement. “The whale’s trick wasn’t bad,” he said “But after due deliberation we have all decided that the dolphin’s majestical dance on the waves was the neatest trick of all!”
“I told you I was the most intelligent!” said the dolphin with a smile. Now it was time for the third and final contest; that of looks. The albatross and the schools of fish were to be the judge of that. They discussed it at length but could not make up their minds as to who was the handsomest of the two.” Eventually the albatross had to come back with a verdict and told the two contestants. “In the category of beauty it is a draw!” he declared “The fish and myself find you both equally magnificent and beautiful! Therefore the contest overall is a draw as you both faired equally well and earned equal points. I hope you both have learned something from this contest.” He said before he flapped his wings and departed of into the west where the sun was setting into the sea.
The crowds of fish and sharks departed satisfied with a good display of skill and power. And the whale and the dolphin swam of into the deeper water of the sea where they cajoled and frolicked amongst themselves, and sometimes they could still be heard arguing about who was the most beautiful sea creature of them all.
