Conversation with a Feminist

I’ve spent my life in apology
for being male
for being white
for being me
for the privilege that some believe
has been handed out so easily.
So please
sit comfortably
and regard the scene:
my 1980
my teenage fields
of Belfast,
Armagh
and Derry cities
the granite seas of derogatory Catholicity.
And please now do me
the courtesy
and explain to me
what is masculinity
in this century?
Petty as they may often seem
but these are my atrocities.
My inequalities
anxieties and insecurities
and they are no more or less worthy
than what your eyes have seen
what you choose to be
or your sexuality.
So it would mean the world to me
if you would sit with me
and talk of privilege
justice and
liberty
on an even playing field.

Very thoughtful poem. It does us good to walk in others' shoes. It is a victory for those in power if we turn on each other.
