Ode an den Dönerkebab
Döner, schönes Götterfleisch
und Tochter aus dem Schwarzen Meer,
Lamm von Gott, dein fettes Reich
erweitert sich nach vielem Bier.
Wenn mein Sinn in Pfützen liegt,
erstürmst du schnell durch meinen Geist.
Mein ungeschickter Hunger fliegt
zu dir auf deinem Thron, der kreist.
Deine Donnern widerhallen
durch die Stadt – wie laut sie singt!
Alle Menschen werden lallen,
wenn dein Lärm die Nacht umringt.
Döner, deine Säfte schmecken
nach Kleinasien, Himmel auch!
Du donnerst um mein Herz zu wecken
und erweiterst meinen Bauch!
Ode to the Doner Kebab
Doner, Flesh of God’s high Helm
and Daughter of the Black Sea Shore,
Lamb of God, thy fatten’d Realm
is widen’d after Beer doth pour.
When my Sense in Puddles lieth,
thou stormst through me, Mind and Bone.
Mine ungainly Hunger flieth
to thee on thy spinning Throne.
Thy Rumblings echo through the City –
how it singeth, with such Might!
All is babbling, none are witty
when thy Din doth ring the Night.
Kebab, thy meaty Juices taste
of Asia Minor, Heaven too!
Thou thunderst till mine Heart is rais’d
and stuffst my Stomach well and true!

Brilliant. The bilingual ones
Brilliant. The bilingual ones bring something. I can't work out why I was hearing Robbie Burns as I read the German one.
And the rhyming system works in both languages!!!
Masterful, Alfie Shoyger. A master of the art. I read a defence of using rhyme in one of your comments once, but this poem is the best defence of all. It speaks, it's aesthetic, it has exactly the right seasoning of humour. It's one of the highlights of six or seven years of reading on ABC Tales.
Thank you!
