We’re all binge watching The Crown, researching Matilda, Profumo, Aquitane et al while transforming once again into Anglophiles. Thank God for the Beatles faction and Wikipedia.
I wonder if we still had descendants of George Washington around what they would think about Trump.
But then again, that’ why we took off in the first place.
Still after all the illiterate tweeting and profane leaks coming from our White House, it’s wonderful to imagine a class of people in castles who actually know how to talk.
Three of my favorite expressions from the Crown are these; 1) I see 2) understood and 3) of course.
Let’s start with “of course” which big shots seem to be saying when the Queen says something that they didn’t expect to hear from her that is different from the course that they had proposed or were imagining. They realize that what they thought happened or what they wanted to happen either didn’t happen or was not going to happen. They realize that the idea or action was “off course” and immediately validate that realization by saying “of course”.
Simultaneously, when the Queen is receiving information upon thoughts or actions that are undeniable but troubling and surprising she tends to simply say “I see” rather than what we might say over here....” are you fuckin’ kidding me.” or “we’re turning the corner on that”
And when the transmission of ideas, thoughts or news is especially troubling the teevee Queen might resort to “understood”. Over here Trump might say “Jesus Fucking Christ.” or “ I’m calling Putin” or “get the fuck outta here...You’re fired.”
If only Trump when informed on election night that he was far behind in electoral AND popular vote, would have said “ I see.”
A couple of days later when the “recounts” verified his defeat, it would have been nice if Donald had simply said “of course.”
Or when McConnell told the president after the electoral college had officially cast their vote that Biden had been elected as president, Trump would have said “understood”.
