'Going Out' Music

Might be a bit of a yoof thread but I'll give it a whirl anyway (prove me wrong oldsters!)

OK.. it's Friday/Saturday Night.. around 8ish you are just about to perform the three S's.. the feint rustle of rolled fivers over amphetamine sulphate and the clink-clink of vodka bottles can be heard downstairs. Someone somewhere is making toast or perhaps something more elaborate like pasta. You stroll over to the stereo clutching a bunch of tapes and/or CD's, your nostrils registering a whiff of mystery/expectation (or perhaps the bin just needs emptying)

OK, I'll cut to the chase.. what do you put on? What prepares you for the evenings festivities?

Me-

'Songs from Northern Britain' by Teenage Fanclub.

'Shake Your Moneymaker' by The Black Crowes.

'White Ladder' by David Gray.

The first Smiths album.

'A Northern Soul' The Verve.

Songs- 'I Fought the Law' The Clash, 'C'mon Baby Let's Go Downtown' Neil Young, 'Crashin In' The Charlatans.

You??

Come on... The Smiths are amazing. Embrace your inner Morrissey. And they're songs are not all for walking home in the rain - Frankly Mr Shankly is a ripping party tune and Unhappy Birthday is suitable for all anniversaries. Otherwise 'Kiss' by Prince has to be the supremo pre going out song. "You don't have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude." Greatest. Lyric. Ever.

How can you possibly listen to the smiths (they do not deserve capital letters) before going out? What festivity are you preparing for? The Lemming summer disco? *Gets out pogo stick* *Bounces on Andrews smith's acetate*

Ummm...anything with a decent beat *grooves around the room in an 'embarrasing Dad' style*

Actually what really gets me going is probably some of the later stuff from Prince.

oh well.. you can't please em all ..or make them all miserable. Hand in Glove and This Charming Man are two of the bounciest Smiths tracks around tho. But yeah.. the one about the moors murders is going it a bit. How about Exile on Main St? Yoof no.. Jumpy and meaningless, yes.

I've never even heard a Smiths' song. Doubt it's my cup of tea.

I think the line 'I've never heard a Smiths song' is the most encouraging news I've seen in my life.

'Panic' - 'Girlfriend in a coma'... not exactly "going out" music but absolutely class all the same, and not nearly as depressing as the titles might have you believe. Elephant stone - the stone roses. Now that's more like it.

EM1977, Prince was the meister of pop funk in his earlier days, i had them all they were copooooooooool. later stuff has been a bit commercial for me.

Smiths is lad's music . I have nothing against them mind - their one song is fine. Someone who died a death left his Smiths album here and hasnt the guts to come back for it! I would only play it now if I was trying to get round someone.

Ah, now I understand. LOL. I read the other thread first. You should get to know Robert ... he likes old 'I can only sing in a monotone maudlin morrissey' too. Either that or he goes shopping at Morrison's. One of the two.

Louie Prema? How do you spell it? Just watched 'Mad Dog and Glory' with that song 'Just A Gogolo' in it. Bet that would be good pre-night out stuff. Who ARE The Rippingtons, tho? Fascinating name..

the Smiths first album? that came out almost twenty years ago. What sort of youth of today would be listening to that? Come to think of it, how could that misery fest prepare anybody for any type of festivities? Unless they were going out to an autopsy party.

an audit of the glove compartment of the honda civic reveals: a tape of simon armitage poetry cds: public image ltd - second edition; nick cave & the bad seeds - murder ballads; the smiths - the queen is dead an apple core and an empty morrisons crisp packet. so well done you! i though that liking the smiths and going out were mutually exclusive, andoru. anyway, i find spagbelle's comment oddly pleasing. stormy, you still getting down to robert palmer? *sniggers*

a little George Benson A little James Brown A lot of Ray Charles get me to a dark and private place with room to dance and music you can hear people over. A trustworthy barman and good company, sounds that submerge the soul in velvet and put strings on your feet written with occasional background laughter in mindand a fire in the belly.

I would put on Mid-Career David Bowie and a little bit of late 60's-era Rolling Stones.

Addicted to Love.. another classic. Well done you. Murder Ballads. Well done you again. But perhaps a night out on a killing spree was not precisely what I had in mind. Especially in a Honda Civic.. somehow doesn't seem very murderous.
