Techie stuff

I bought a cordless keyboard (love it) and cordless mouse (loathe it) the other day, and I'm intrigued as to why, on ABC (and only on ABC it seems, thought I dont use any other forums) when I use the scroll button to zip up a thread, it starts going back a page then forward, then back again like mad. Any idea why anyone?

Sounds like you've got the scroll button controlling the Forward/Back buttons on your browser. But don't ask me how to change it.

Check the batteries. *you didn't pull the batteries out of some other nearby device did you?*

Look for some sort of mouse options under COntrol Panel, or better still any software you installed with it.

Opposite way round for me: The cordless keyboard is stuffed in a cupboard, whilst the cordless mouse is a solution to all my left-handed-related and equipment-positional problems. I only bought the two as a package because it was on ebay as cheap as any cordless mouse on its own. Watch out for that software: I dumped mine in the end, caused too many problems. And watch when you install, they try to fill your hard drive with promotional crap. Mine's Logitech, and they are right money-grabbing t**ts.

As a rule of thumb, never install ANYTHING if you can help it. The majority of software that comes with things like mouses, cameras, soundcards, speakers, mobile phones, mp3 players etc. is crap, not necessary for the use of the device, and wants to be on all the time eating up system resources and trying to talk to the internet. A certain technology company who's name may or may not appear not a million miles away from the top of this post actually used to install spyware along with an otherwise innocent (but rubbish) audio player program.

This is PC line - radio, I didnt install any software, because Im using XP and it said I didnt have to install anything - I do have a cd though, maybe I'll install it anyway. I cant find any options anywhere to stop it doing it at all. It is really out of all proportion how much it enrages me, but Im so used to using the wheel now, I keep forgetting. The batteries I got with it only lasted a day - that cant be right either can it? I know I spent ten minutes pointing and clicking at the wall because red flashy lights on purple look so disco its amazing, but even so...

This mouse is taking the piss now. The cursor wont stay where I point it, and keeps flicking away from where I need it to be. The back boiler is about to be fed I fear.

The batteries you got with it are almost definitely shite. Was it a refurb, in which case they may have been partly used. Get some good quality rechargeables (ASDA do a nice recharger/battery combo by Uniross, not expensive)...and personally, I say: if it doesn't work out with the mouse, chuck, and focus your love on to your keyboard. But be weary of that CD.

rf doobry?

By the way, the batteries SHOULD last about 2-3 weeks.

not a refurb, totally sparkly new aluminium (well silver plastic) and black, it is very eighties, and goes very well with my hideous black ash desk (long story, and dont start, have had the piss taken out of me on here for it before) Ive got a great rechargable battery thing, but the batteries from it are long gone... stuffed in musical garfields and the like, on top of wardrobes i suspect.

I had a similar problem and spent ages trying to sort it - only to discover, as Dan hints, that it was nothing to do with the mouse but a stuck key on the keyboard.

Radio frequency. They usually have several channels in case one clashes with other stuff around etc.

*hyperventilates* How am i supposed to find that?

(RTFM) consult your documentation, my mouse has a wee button on the bottom and another on the receiver.

You'll need an Radio Frequency Spectrum Analyzer. Tune it to the HF range and use a 500 Mhz bandwidth setting with a sweep time of 20 msec. Don't worry about impedence mismatching, it's not that critical. The conversion formula for IF conversion is 10log BWin/BWout, but that will only give you a rough feel for the signal level, minus insertion loss and phase oscillations. Look for the little spike in the display and set your peak search to capture an average of 50 sweeps. Measure the amplitude in dbm, convert to effective isotropic radiated power and then you'll know exactly what you are up against. Afterwards, toss it in the trash and buy an optical with a cord for about 8 bucks (that should be around 3 pence english).

The batteries in my radio keyboard have been in there for 3 mths now, no probs. The mouse works fine too, though I don't actually use it as it's a ball mouse and I prefer my infra red one. They're doing a nice one in Lidl's at the moment for 20 quid.

Personally, I'd take the cordless mouse and toss it in the trash. It will eat batteries. An optical mouse is better and more reliable. Every cordless PC thing I've ever purchased is now sitting in a locker covered with other crap that never gets used. You shouldn't need to install a single bit of software to use your cordless mouse running any version of Windows newer than NT or 98. Also, not all batteries are the same. I'm assuming your using AA or AAA. You should use standard Alkaline or as somebody else suggested a good rechargable. Some other electronic devices come with batteries (like Sony remote controls and things) and they don't have the same current draw characteristics as Alkaline. If you have Japanese batteries, chuck them...they're weird and can cause other electronic things to misbehave.

Yeah, my rechargeable batteries last about 3 months too... mind you I find that it pays to leave them charging for about 12 hours after the initial quick charge.

I had to intall the software with my stuff because the default XP drivers don't cover some of the more sophisticated things the hardware is capapble of. eg. the mouse is a five button with extra facilities on, and the keyboard won't display the function staus in the tray unless it's installed properly. One of the probs viz a viz batteries is that standard AA give out 1.5volts and rechargeables only deliver 1.2volts. Now I know the difference per battery isn't much but it can cause probs with some stuff. I agree with Denver regarding optical mice though.

Jeeze George...is that a two handed mouse?

Anonymous's picture
lol, no Denver. What I like about it is it has horizontal scrolling and zoom functions and when I'm photo-fiddling and have pics on the screen at 500% it's very useful. It basically has two buttons on each side and a multifunction scroll well. the scroll wheel has a vertical press facility and also a 'push sideways' one two.

All I want is a scroll button that works. *huffs*

The driver installed probably dose'nt work with auto scrawl Liana. Most cordless mouse has auto scrawl and so needs the driver that came with the mouse. Should be in the instructions.

I have an offset printing press that is easier to operate! You should see how big I can make pictures.

Actually mine's an optical two (that means "no balls", right?) ; and yes, a few weeks is a VERY conservative estimate on my part. I just didn't want to upset Liana to much; as Missi has, with his mouse/penis extension...

Lol, Radio, Karen and I bought ten AA batteries in B & M Bargains for a quid, and took them on holiday to use with our digital camera. Of course, these pieces of crap were designed for remote controls and the like, and each pair lasted about an hour! Jeez, in my day, as a battery was a f**king battery.

It's the XQJ-37, Nuclear Powered Roto Plooker Mouse. It looks like a chrome plated vacuum cleaner in the shape of a pig, with marital aids stuck all over it. Comes with a pair of pliers.

..."optical TOO"... no "as" before "a battery.." Why can't I type anymore? Is there a keyboard that stops you rushing posts?

Yes, it's made by John Bull and comes with a pair of tweezers.
