The Outlandish Adventure of Darren Darko
Darren wasn't quite sure where he was, but he was sure that he didn't
belong. That much, at least, was abundantly clear. He wasn't sure what
had happened to him or how he got to wherever he was, but when he woke
up his vision was very blurry; he couldn't make out much of anything.
It took awhile, an hour, two hours, maybe longer, before his vision
finally cleared up.
Darren was over six feet tall and 180 pounds, which was mostly from
muscle. He had black wavy hair down to his shoulders with it shaved
underneath. He had hazel eyes and had to wear glasses.
He found himself sitting underneath a couple of great big trees in the
middle of a meadow. The trees were as wide as a semi was long and as
tall as skyscrapers, maybe even taller.
Something else wasn't right; the color of everything wasn't what it
should have been. The trunks of the trees were pink and the leaves dark
blue; the grass was almost a blood red; the sky was changing colors, it
looked like a big rainbow that never went away. The sun was the only
thing that made Darren afraid of where he was, he wanted to run and
hide but there was nowhere to go. It was pitch black but emitting a lot
of heat. Darren stuck his hand out of the shade and he could feel the
sun starting to burn it. You would think that since the sun was black
the world would be too, but it wasn't. Darren couldn't figure out where
the light was coming from, but it was very bright and no heat was
coming from that source of light.
At first Darren didn't notice the smell of this strange and very weird
world until he started to get hungry. First it smelled like a bakery
shop, then the smell of a dump truck just gone by, then fresh fruit
came and gone, and then like someone was having a cook out. The smells
were changing about every five to ten minutes, ever time a different
smell.
All these smells were making him so hungry it felt like his stomach was
trying to eat itself. He hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast the
day before last. Darren looked around but didn't see anything that
looked edible, so he decided to take a nap to get his mind off of food.
As he was lying down he notice some things up in the trees. Darren
climbed one of the trees that took awhile to get to where the unusual
things were, what he hoped was some thing edible. When he finally
reached them, they were a little smaller than a car, all different very
bright colors, and were all different shapes (squares, triangles,
octagons, stars and many more).
Darren grabbed a big handful out of the first one he came to. He jumped
back and all most fell because like magic that spot healed up. It was a
yellow one that tasted like cherries. He decided to sit down and eat
more of this one until he could find out if there were any side
effects. Of course there was, everything has side effects. He started
floating up into the air. Darren thought it was way cool, but he was
almost to the top of the tree and he knew that if he would go beyond
the top he would have no hope of surviving the heat of the sun.
Darren was getting scared and grabbed a handful of the nearest fruit he
could get to. It was a purple one that, tasted like chicken, made him
sink. He landed on a branch and started to wonder if all the different
colors did different things. He grabbed some of a green one that made
him go left; an orange one made him do flips in mid air, and after a
few seconds it made him sick. Darren had to stop and quick before he
puked his guts out, there was a gray one in his reach. He grabbed a
handful and ate it; he stopped and was stuck in mid air. The gray
didn't do anything else and Darren was glad for that. He had enough for
now and wanted his feet to be back on the ground.
He made a basket out of his shirt and grabbed big handfuls of all the
different colored fruit until it was full. Darren took one last look
around; he saw mountains, rivers, forests, a huge lake, and what looked
like a village that was by the lake. He didn't know how he would be
able to get there because he didn't see any thing that made shade that
would reach it.
Darren decided it was time to go back down so he took a little bit of
the purple chunk that was in his basket shirt. As he was heading down
he notice some thing at the base of the tree. It looked like a bird and
was a mix of red, yellow, and orange. It had very long tail feathers
and a beak like an eagle. He didn't know if he should stay up in the
tree until it left or go down and see what it was. Darren was very
afraid because he didn't know if it would try to kill him or if it
would he able to help him.
Darren didn't want to die and was about ready to go back up into the
tree to wait the bird thing out, but he had to find out were he was and
how he could get back home. As he got closer he noticed the thing was
sleeping. He went to the other side of the tree to lie the fruit down;
then went over to examine it to see what kind of creature it might be.
Darren couldn't get to close because its feathers were fire and was
very hot. The grass was burned all the way around it and was spreading
quickly. It had black legs and very sharp talons. It was a bird all
right; looked just like the phoenix from all the myths and legends
books Darren loved to read.
Darren was trying to figure out how the phoenix's feathers were fire
when all of a sudden the feathers grew twice as big and twice as hot.
He was so scared that he took off running to get behind the tree before
the phoenix saw him, but it was to late. The phoenix whipped its tail
feathers out to make a circle around him. Darren didn't know what to
do; there was no escape from the phoenix.
The thing Darren didn't know was that the phoenix wouldn't hurt a
living thing unless they were hurting someone else. All the phoenix
wanted was someone to talk to since every one was afraid of him and
would all ways run and hide whenever they saw him coming. The phoenix
had enough of everybody hiding from him and he really needed someone to
talk to. He decided that when the next person came by he wouldn't let
them run and hide; unfortunately it was Darren.
Darren was terrified but showed a calm face because he had a feeling
that the phoenix was the only one that could help him get back home.
Though he felt that the phoenix could help him get back home, he still
was surprised when the phoenix spoke his language.
"Please don't be afraid of me, I just want someone to talk to"
explained the phoenix to Darren.
"OK, but why keep me imprisoned in this circle of fire?" puzzled
Darren.
"It was the only way I could talk to you because you were running
away." Said the phoenix.
"Who wouldn't run from something that looked like you", said Darren, "I
mean you're so big and have fire feathers and razor sharp
talons."
"Ok, now that the ice is broken, let me introduce myself. My name is
Ryan," Proclaimed the phoenix. "And you are?"
"Darren, Darren Darko. Now that you know who I am, where might I be?"
he asked.
"I couldn't really tell you because I used to be like you and didn't
know how I got here." Ryan said looking at the sky "For a matter of
fact I don't think that anyone here knows how they got here. Please
tell me that you haven't eaten or drank anything from this world!" he
said in a worried voice.
"What if I did?"
"If you did I believe that there is no hope for your return home and,
ummm, and?
"And what?"
Darren was getting very scared and Ryan wished he hadn't said anything.
A gentle breeze began to blow and the sun was beginning to set. It
started to get cooler but the light still shown bright as ever.
"Never mind. Forget I said anything." Ryan said quickly "I better get
you to some place safe before the light goes out. We only have until
one hour after the sun is gone!"
"Why? What's going to happen then?"
"That's when all the night creatures come out and some of them will try
to eat you."
"I saw a little village over by the lake. Is it safe to go
there?"
"I never been there but I think so."
Darren grabbed his shit and they headed towards the village. It cooled
down enough for Darren to walk out from the shade. The sun finally went
down and the light was starting to dim a little, but the colors of the
sky were still vivid as ever. The village was a pretty long walk but
Darren felt safe with Ryan by his side. He thought it was nice of the
phoenix to make sure he got to a safe place for the night.
As they were walking to the village Ryan asked " What was the last
thing you remember doing before you got here?"
"I was helping my girlfriend clean out her basement. There was a lose
brick in the far wall so I pulled it out. A door opened up very fast;
it knocked me to the ground. I saw a very bright flash that blinded me
and then it felt like someone was carrying me away. I guess I passed
out after that."
"Hum, I was in the basement to getting something for my grandmother,
I?I?I don't remember what I was doing down there."
"You mean you were once human too?"
"Uh, yes a long time ago. I lost track of how long I've been
here."
"What made you turn into a phoenix and why did you turn into
one?"
Ryan didn't want to answer that question for he thought it just might
make it so Darren wouldn't want to try to get back home. So he took off
into the air to think about what he could tell him but kept his eyes on
Darren.
As he was landing he said "I'm not sure of what turns you into these
strange creature but I think that what ever it is It finds something
about you, like your hair color, your personality, if you like the dark
more than the light, things like that. For me I guess it my hair color.
All my friends at home all ways called me fireball."
"I don't want to turn into any weird creatures." Darren said.
It was all most dark and they weren't in the village yet but it was in
sight. It was getting cold and Darren was shivering.
"Why don't you put your shirt on?" asked Ryan
Darren didn't want him to know he was carrying fruit from the tree
"Uhhh, I'm using it to carry some of my stuff."
"Oh, Ok" So the phoenix moved closer to Darren and put his wing above
him.
Darren jumped, he saw something really ugly flying above him. The gates
of the village were opened and he took off running for them. He didn't
want what ever that thing was to eat and he didn't feel that safe
around Ryan anymore.
The gates slammed shut just as Darren dove across the gateway. Darren
was frightened because he didn't want Ryan to leave him even though he
didn't feel as safe as before. He was pounding on the gates until Ryan
spoke.
"Darren you will be safe here. Don't be afraid, I'll be watching out
for you."
"Do you promise you won't leave me?" he cried.
"Yes, now go and find some one that will let you stay with them!"
So off Darren went to find out what kind of creatures lived in this
village. It was dark and it felt like he was going through a maze.
There were many different passageways but he never ran into a dead end.
Either he was going the right way or he was going in a circle, but then
as he went around one of the corners he saw a small dim light up ahead.
He hoped this was a village with very nice creatures in it.
As he got closer to the light he saw houses like on earth but where
built out of things he never saw before. Darren stood by the light and
looked around to find he was in the center of the village and there was
a lot of streets going out from the light. All the light in the houses
was out except for one at the far north side of the village. Darren was
afraid to go down to that house but he was more afraid of the things
out in the night.
Darren finally reached the house. It was different than the other ones
and he felt it would be a safe place for him to stay. He walked up to
the door and hesitated to knock; he wasn't for sure if these creatures
were nice or not. Darren finally worked up enough courage to knock but
before he could the door opened. He jumped back but when he saw there
was nobody at the door he got closer and quietly asked if anybody was
home.
No one answered so he walked into the house to see if he could find
anyone. The rooms of this house were beautifully decorated. The inside
looked just like the inside of a house back home with a kitchen,
dinning room, din, living room, and some bedrooms up stairs. The
bathrooms were different though; they had waterfalls in them with
flowers and butterflies around it and nothing else. Darren thought that
was strange but went on looking for the room with the light on.
He finally reached it at the very end of the house on the top floor.
Darren slowly opened the door to find what looked like a human writing
at a desk; it was a girl with light blue hair and he thought she was so
beautiful. "Are you the only human here?" He said barely loud enough
for her to hear.
She jump up and knocked her chair to the floor. "Human? Who are you
calling a human?"
"You! Aren't you a human?"
She said as turning around so Darren could see her wings. "No, I'm what
most people would call a fairy"
Darren was in shock; he was hoping that he wasn't the only human on the
world. "I'm sorry, you jested looked like a human and I was hoping you
were one too."
"Why would you want me to be a human when you will not be one for
long?"
"What are you talking about? I will all ways be human!"
"No, you ate the fruit from the trees, and since you ended up in this
region you will be turning into a fairy just like the rest in this
village."
Darren all most fainted; he couldn't believe that he was going to turn
into a fairy.
The girl asked, "What is your name?"
"What?" Darren didn't quiet hear her for he was still a little shocked
from the news he just heard.
"Your name what is it?"
"Oh, I'm sorry it's been a very very long day for me. My name is Darren
Darko."
"I understand, not everybody that ends up here makes it thought the
night. You are very lucky Darren. My name is Daisy, you will be living
here now."
"Why must I stay here?"
"My father is the ruler of this region and he said I have to decide
where the new fairies will live. I think you should stay here. I
believe that you will be a great help to us." Daisy said as see walked
over to shut her book on the table. "Your room will be across the hall.
This is my room, if you need anything please come and get me."
Darren went over to his room and found only a bed in there with some of
her father's clothes at the foot end of the bed. The clothes were a
little too big but they were comfortable. After he changed his clothes
he went to bed hoping that all of this is nothing but a dream.
The birds were singing and the light was starting to shine as Darren
made his way out of bed. He realized it wasn't a dream when he went to
the bathroom and found the waterfall.
Darren went over to Daisy's room, "Daisy. Daisy!"
"What do you need?" she asked half asleep.
"Do you think you could explain the bathroom for me?"
"You have to go behind the waterfall, it's there just to make the
bathroom look pretty."
Oh, Ok. That's a weird place to put a bathroom, wouldn't you get wet
going through the waterfall?"
"No, the water splits as you get near it."
"Daisy, why don't you bring your friend down and introduce him to us."
Her mother said.
"Ok, he'll be down in a minute." Daisy said as she was coming down the
stairs.
Daisy, her mother, and father went to sit in the dinning room for
breakfast as they waited for Darren.
"I think he got lost up there?" her father said in a worried
tone.
"No, here he comes" Daisy said.
"I'm sorry I took so long." Darren said as he walked into the dinning
room. "Hi I'm Darren. You have a beautiful house and a lovely
daughter.
"Thank you, we tried to make our house like the one back home but its
not easy. Daisy isn't our real daughter, but we love her like she is.
My name is Zay and this is my wife Bell."
They all started to eat breakfast. There were different kinds of
berries, and they had a light purple colored water to drink. Darren
didn't eat anything because he was all most certain those berries came
from the trees he was at.
Daisy stared at Darren and wondered why he wasn't eating. Then she
remembered and said "You don't have to worry about the berries, they
won't do anything to you. When you soak them in water from the lake it
neutralizes the fruit and the water."
"And the water?" Darren asked and now being afraid to eat or drink
anything from this word.
"If you drink the water with out it being neutralized it will make you
grow up to ten feet tall or get really fat, but it's ok to drink this
water."
As the day went on they showed Darren all the thing that he will need
to know and to all the people in the village. He forgot all about Ryan
who was now looking for any body that might have been sent to this
unnamed planet. All the Fairies in the village loved Darren and they
too felt that he might be able to help.
Daisy took Darren to the forest where he found a hollow vine. Daisy
wondered what he was going to use that for, but forgot all about it
after awhile. Then she took him to the mountain to bring some food to
the abominable snowman. There was some food up there but he loved the
fruit. It was getting late so they headed back home.
It was all most night, Darren and Daisy was out on a balcony talking
about all the creatures and weird things that happen on this planet.
Daisy brought Darren out to the balcony to tell him something that she
just didn't know how to tell. So she took a deep breath and blurted it
out. "Darren, The night creatures are making there way through our
magic that is protecting our village at night!'
"I'm sorry, but I don't see how I can help."
Then all of a sudden Darren felt this sharp pain go through his back,
he screamed from the excruciating pain.
"Relax, your changing and fighting it will only make it worse." Daisy
said trying to calm Darren down.
Darren, barely being able to say anything from the pain, struggled to
say, "What do you mean I'm changing?"
"Everyone that comes to this planet changes, but no body knows what
changes them."
With one last scream the wings finally came out. Then his hair turned
to a midnight blue and his ears became pointed. He was mad and happy at
the same time. He wanted to go home but now he could fly. Out of know
where a bright light came from the sky and when they looked up they saw
the force field growing stronger and bigger. It now covered the entire
fairy region and nothing was able to penetrate it.
With a sparkle in her eyes and a big smile on her face Daisy said,
"That's how you can help. You saved our village, but if you ever leave
the force field will vanish and none of us will stand a chance against
the night creatures."
"I have to stay anyway because there is no way home."
Early the next day Darren had his vine and was heading over to the
lake. There was a tree by the edge of the lake and he took some string
and tied one end to the tree. Daisy was coming down to see what he was
doing. "What do you think you are going to do?"
Ignoring her question he asked, "Is there any thing that will try to
eat me in the lake?"
"NO, But you can't swallow any water!" she said with a puzzled look on
her face.
"I love swimming. I use to go scuba diving back home. I'll only stay
down there for a little while."
Darren gave Daisy a kiss on the check, stuck the other end of the vine
in his mouth, and dove in. There was fish that look just like the ones
back home and there was a mermaid and her family too. He swam down to
the bottom and was looking for a nice pretty shell to give to
daisy.
After a couple of minutes he found one. It was the size of a basketball
and was the prettiest blue he had ever seen. Darren went over to pick
it up but it wouldn't budge. So he went back up to the surface and got
some more string, dove back down to the shell, tied the sting around
it, and went to find the mermaid family to see if they would help pull
it up. After a little struggling of explaining with his hands they
finally agreed to help. They too struggled, but then it started to
budge a little.
With one last pull it finally came out, but after it came out they all
took off. Darren didn't know why they swam away, and then he turned
around and saw a black hole. He went over to see what it was and when
he took a look through it he saw inside a basement. He couldn't believe
it. There was a way home, but he had a little problem. If he left all
the fairies would die, but he missed his family and girlfriend.
Darren took one last look through the hole and noticed it was his
girlfriend's basement. Then he saw his best friend coming down to the
basement with her. By the look of things they didn't even realize he
was gone. He took off to the surface with the shell.
Darren was very upset, but after seeing Daisy he realized that he
didn't need them. He had the girl, well the fairy of his dreams. He
walked over to her and handed her the shell. She loved it and gave him
a great big huge.
"I have one more thing." Darren told her.
"I don't think there is anything that could top this."
"There is a way to get back home."
After hearing that she all most fainted. "Where? How?"
"At the bottom of the lake; it was underneath that shell. So if you
want to go home you can."
"Are you going to go?" She asked with a sad look on her face.
"No, These fairies need me and I have no reason to go home."
"What about your family, friends, and girlfriend?"
Staring deep into her eyes he said, "They don't need me anymore and the
only girl I want to be with is right here."
After giving him another big huge and a long kiss, she said " We must
tell everyone that there is a way home, but they don't have to leave if
they don't want to!"
They told everyone but nobody wanted to leave after hearing that Darren
was going to stay and marry Daisy. Everyone was happy and celebrated
for three long days.
Darren and Daisy got marry a couple of months later. Other creatures
from this planet went back home. Everyone got what they wanted and
lived happy ever after. Even Ryan found himself a girlfriend and now
will have someone to talk to.
