The Saturday Afternoon Dolphin
The dolphin soars out of my arms
as if I had dreamt it
and dives through the pavement
and disappears down,
like a laughing, blue clown,
to invisible oceans below.
So I carry on walking.
And after a while, the streets seem so grey
and the day seems so long
and the way seems so endlessly endless………..
that I call through the pavement,
"I'm here! Come and get me! I'm stuck on this Saturday street!"
And the dolphin bursts up at my feet!
I jump on his back and, as nobody looks, we soar…………
past the lamp-post and bus-stop
and marble-walled chip shop
and over the Mina Road trees.
And just as I think it's not happening,
we dive through impossible seas.
