28. Jesus He Knows Me

Az put the cocktails down in front of Sammy and me. Most of the drinks stayed in the glasses. He tried to turn away but Sammy banged the flat of his hand on the bar.
'They can wait,' he pointed over at the bikers who had shambled over to the other end of the bar.
Azazael hunched over the bar, looked over his shoulder, although there were only rows of bottles and glassware behind him.
'Look man, You gotta think. Jesus is up there with Mommy now. Everyone knows about your other client, who you're looking to speak to in his behalf. The big man is behaving strangely. You have a good look at Lilith when you see her at that stupid prize ceremony. A good look. That's all I got to say to you, Gabe. Just leave me alone, huh!'
I could have asked him how he knew so much about my business, but I was sure he wouldn't tell me, not even if I had set Samael on him.
So I asked him something else,
'What has Jesus got to do with anything?'
Azazael laughed, 'Who's missing from the picture, Gabe?'
I looked at Sammy, who lifted a shoulder and took a long slug of his cocktail.
Our bartender was still laughing as he went to attend to the bikers' order.
Truth to tell the only missing figure I could think of was the Holy Ghost, but he'd been a slippery customer since whichever dummy wrote the Acts of the Apostles made him up.
Sammy grunted, 'What about Jesus's brothers?'
My drink didn't look as good on the bar-top as in my glass. When I stopped laughing I asked what they would be doing within 7 Heavens of their half-brother.
'Mebbe they think they got a case to take over. Jesus ain't interested in anythin' but choc'lit, the way I heard it.' Samael downed his drink,
'See ya around, if ya don't get yerself … you-know-what.'
He left and I thought it was about time I hooked up with Sam Sara, before we went to that dumb book-prize, dog-and-pony show.
I was just leaving myself when Azazael called me back,
'Jesus dyin', huh?'
'I think it's suicide by chocolate.'
'He's real close to Uriel now, up there in God's Lil' Acre with dear old mom. You'd best be careful, watch out for Nelson's client. He's sure to be watchin' out fer you.'
'Whoever he is.'
Azazael gave me a look which said he'd heard that I was a bit dumb, but that I'd still surprised him
