The Last Leaf To Fall
will experience the common fate
shared by all living things, just a bit later
Idly musing, with leaves
pattering down all around me,
feelings of wonderment fill my head,
why does a leaf leave the branch foliage,
depart from others it matured with,
at just that moment?
With genetics ruled by mutation,
few things bonded by birthright or
commonality, even by deeper passions,
having survived Life's random lottery,
are destined to remain together
right to the same timely end.
It's about efficacy
of function and sustenance, the
propensity to continue to thrive
unique to everyone.
Meaning, as anticipation rises,
the bitter-sweet mindset awaiting
the last leaf to fall should surely be
characterised by feelings of pride and
loneliness fading into euphoria, and,
a certain trepidation, knowing,
the already fallen
will have gone through that most
definitive, incomparable moment yet
to be experienced by every living thing,
the inhalation of a last taste of life,
before entering oblivion.
