Sheila and Bev
By hippie girl
Bev and Sheila met 19 years ago . At Bev's daughter ,Meredith's wedding. It was Christmastime. Sheila was the harpist at the reception. She was smitten by the love bug, the instance she caught a glimpse of her.Bev was tall with olive skin and oversized brown eyes that blinked a lot. She was willowy for a woman late in middle age.
The way Bev sashayed around the dining hall like a butterfly in that lacy light pink pantsuit was mesmerizing. It was improbable anything would come of her fantasy. She was mostly a lesbian in theory these days. Other women rarely asked her out. Short people with reddish brown hair in a ponytail and coke bottle glasses were not in style. To top it off, she was painfully shy around people she didn't know.
Her mother usually had to order for her because Sheila was so embarrassed of her stutter. She didn't even know if Bev even fancied women. The slinky glittery, black dress the harpist company had chosen for her that showcased all her rolls of fat made her feel even more awkward. It was the Yuletide Season after all. Miracles have been known to happen on occasion.
After finishing a set ,Sheila took a pit stop and found Bev in the powder room part of the ladies room with a broken high heel. She has this sheepish look on her face like a lost little kid.
''What happened?''Sheila said. "
My shoe broke.I am not sure what to do.This is the one thing duck tape won't fix. I tried to use the emergency super glue I had in my purse , but it's all dried out.I guess we could go out there and perform my mother of the bride duties in stocking feet. But Meredith's friends are the sort of people who notice and are offended BY EVERYTHING. I already embarrass her constantly without really meaning to. I don't want to add ruined my daughter's wedding to my resume of things I failed at as a mother."
" I have an extra pair of dress shoes in my car. They are 8 and a half. The company makes us keep an extra pair whenever we have a gig. Just in case there is an emergency. Like we step in dog poo.Or someone barfs all over our shoes after binge drinking too much sangria. What size shoes shoes do you wear?" Sheila says not stuttering at all.
'' I am an 8. '' Says Bev,smiling a crooked smile.
A couple of hours later when the crowd had thinned out considerably and Sheila was getting ready to leave. When she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was Bev.
" I was wondering if you would like to join me for a round or two as a huge thank - you for everything. '' Sheila gave her a polite nod, but on the inside she is doing a happy dance. They talked about about everything late into the night and Sheila didn't stutter once.Even though this is the most she had ever talked or laughed in about ten years.A round of drinks turned into a lot of drinks. Then ended up staggering out of the hotel bar after they closed and went up to Bev's room.
'' Their is a few things you should know about me,'' Bev said, slurring and hanging onto the wall, So she doesn't fall down.
"I have never been with a woman before , although I thought about it all the time over the years.Their always seems to be something missing in all my relationships with men.
I like to think at 53 it isn't too late to change. My hair is actually a wig.Just In case my hair flies off my head in the heat of the moment, .Because my real hair never grew back right after I had cancer about five years ago. Also, I am pretty frightening looking naked. My ex- husband was completely turned off by my mastectomy scars, stretch marks and a c section scar and wrinkles, so I understand if you have to do it with your eyes closed or leave, Bev said. She looked ready to say more things to deter her, but Sheila cut her off.
'' Their are a few things you should know about me.Sometimes I can't leave the house because the world is so scary to an introvert like me. I have so much anxiety, it is a challenge to go to work and talk to people. But I am talking to you with ease.Isn't your ex husband the obnoxious red faced guy that almost got beat up when he tried and pick up a 17 year old that looked 25 at the bat Mitzvah next door ?" ''That sounds like him, Bev said, rolling her eyes, letting out a honking laugh. They opened the hotel room and started a new chapter in the old book that was their lives.
