1958 Heart Throb
By ice rivers
This was a great time to be a Johnny or a Jimmy and white and talented. Like every year, this was a great year for dreams and eyes. Like every year, it's always about talent, complexion, connection and cognitive resonance.
Remember making out was big and the semi-private version of making out was called slow dancing. The girls in this slow dancing class, remember, were making the move from polite American bandstand "istic" button wearing fans into screaming, crazyass, mini-skirted, texture stockinged Beatlemaniacs whose barely repressed libidos were essential to the revolution that was to come later.
In other words, the time was ripe for heart throbs. A Heart throb in this case is a Johnny or a Jimmy, singing about dreams in the construction of a Caucasian musical version of semi-private making out called slow dancing.
A hearthrob is a few hits short of teen idol and a couple hits beyond one hit wonder although with heart throbs, there's always the danger that they will become one hitters but their music is so dreamy and so nice to dance to, who cared. It was all about the beauty of the girl with whom you're dancing and her dreamy eyes.
Thank you Jimmy Clanton.
Thank you Johnny Tillotson
