Appreciating Security

Last night I went with my brother to a ball game at Frontier Field. Our home team is the Rochester Red Wings. We are a triple A organization which means one step away from the major leagues.
I am a stockholder in this pround franchise which is approaching 100 years in existence.
My brother is a season ticket holder. Needless to say, he goes to a lot of games.
As we entered the ball park yesterday, there was a security guy at the gate.
My brother good naturedly said to the guy "You know my bag. You've opened it quite a lot."
The guard was kinda embarassed and apologetically said "yeah but it's my job".
Now here was a guy who had looked through this bag a whole helliva lot, yet he cared enough to do his job one more time. He easily could have let it go.
I stopped him right there. "You don't have to apologize. You're doing your job and you might be saving everybody's life for all we know. I want to thank you very much for your work ethic and the important job that you do."
The security man was stunned for a moment.
"Thank you so much, I really appreciate that. Don't hear that a lot."
I said "you should hear it every night."
He said "I hear a lot of other stuff. Last night a guy came in here and when I asked him to open his bag, he went through the whole invasion of privacy thing and was mother effing me with every third word. Even when I cleared hin through, he took the time to look over his shouldeer and mothereff me again. I couldn't pay any attention because the very next guy after him was trying to walk in with a giant hunting knife in his bag. By the time I get rid of the hunting knife guy, the other guy was somewhere safe in the stands."
I listened. Shrugged my shoulders and rolled my eyes like you do when you hear another guy tell a story about an asshole.
I decided that I would take the time to thank Security guards when I saw them.
So later in the game, I was going to the john when I walked past another security guy. Our eyes met as I approached him. I got the feeling he thought I might be a problem.
"Can I help you, sir?" he asked suspiciously.
I said "You've already helped me tonight and everybody in this ball park. I jusrt wanted to say thanks."
Once again the guard was surprised and said "I really appreciate that.
I said" these days everybody needs to appreciate security".
He agreed.
I'm gonna contiue to do this.
Just take a moment and be grateful.
