The lyrics of the song detail the night that the Montreux Casino burnt to the ground during a concert by Frank Zappa when someone fired a flare gun into the ceiling.
Deep Purple was in a nearby studio recording their next album when they witnessed the fire, the chaos and the aftermath which included smoke on the water and fire in the air blowing up to the sky as the casino on the shore of the lake erupted into flames
Listen to the song again for the story about the fire at the gambling house.

You know I had a band back then....
At some point we learned that we didn't have to work so hard when we played. We started taking longer breaks and played the songs we played best which were also our favorites. We were a garage/cover band but in reality we were a dance band....nobody really cared what we were playing as long as they could dance to it and after a certain number of beers almost anybody can "dance" to almost anything. Nobody was there for a concerto, especiallly not us.
One of our favorite tricks to make sure we played what we wanted to play was to claim that whatever we were about to play was a request as in "we got a request to play a song we played earlier so once again...here's 96 Tears."
An organ riff and three chords
Once 96 Tears got into this rotation people actually started to request it which we felt compelled to honor so we would play it again sometimes even again and again but the limit was four times a night.
Meanwhile, we took longer breaks. During our longer breaks, we drank more beer. The more beer we drank, the better 96 tears sounded. Almost any band, after a certain amount of beers can "play " 96 Tears and cause the "crowd" to "dance".
Then one night, we actually got an authentic request for a song that we had been practicing from a friend who had heard us practicing the song and more or less dared us to play it. Drunk as were, we accepted the dare.

Crispy Bacon was our lead singer and frontman.
He knew the story behind the song.
Every time we played the song from then on, Crispy would say "and by request" then we'd start the riff and Crispy would tell the story about the creation of the song.
Everybody fell for it every time and pretty soon our show consisted of mainly playing 96 Tears and Smoke on The Water over and over again between breaks which kept getting longer and longer in which we and the audience kept drinking more and more then we might play Gloria and pretend that we were THEM and Crispy would throw in a few Van Morrison high kicks until once again

We gave the people what they wanted, fucked up as they and we were and we got paid and got laid.
Now a three score minus two years later years, I'm confronted with choosing an eight minute piece to perform in front of a seemingly sober international audience on Zoom. This time, I have more than a thousand options to choose from. I like them all. I need help. Can I get a request? Anybody? Jennifer?
Whaddya wanna hear?
We have a request
Thank you Jennifer (wink wink)

There's nothing like some
There's nothing like some beers, and some stoppin good sounds to create the best atmosphere.
Enjoyable read that brought back some memories.
