When does the end of a relationship begin?
Lucille had a propensity towards baby talk which Doug resented. The first time that she called him "Dodo", he recoliled as if he had been slapped in the face. Lucille noticed his reaction and asked him about it. Doug made it very clear that he had a revulsion towards baby talk. His parents had been very tough on him when he was a child when it came to articulation. Any kind of baby talk sent him back to childhood insecurity and parental disapproval. If he were ever going to present Lucille to his parents, any kind of baby talk would be held against her.
Lucille thought Doug was a paragon of masculinity and etiquette. He was kind, empathetic and he had money as long as he was connected to his parents and their estate.
Lucille learned her lesson and throughout the remainder of their courtship, Doug became Douglas which worked for everybody.
Lucille, who was a walking occasion of sin, still enjoyed public display of affection and sometimes took them way too far. Douglas could resist anything but temptation and often found himself in compromising positions which he thought had gone unnoticed until the day his Father warned him against such "lewd" public behaviour. The attraction between Douglas and Lucille had become obvious to all as well as their lack of restraint which had come to the attention of Momsy and Popsy and was frowned upon with emphasis.
Lucille and Doug simply became more discrete in their passion. Lucille knew what she wanted and she wanted Doug in every way.
Eventually, the courtship led to the altar and the altar led to the wedding night. Although they had "known" one another hundreds of times before the wedding night, Doug had preserved a fantasy about sex with a bride which made this occasion that much more exciting to him.
Lucille entered the wedding in silk and lace. Doug overwhelmed with the synchonicity of fantasy and reality started tearing off his clothes. At first Lucille seemed amused until the final moments when Doug tore off his socks and threw them to the floor.
"DoDo pick up those fucking socks".
The mood changed.
It never fully returned.
The marriage lasted four years.
She took him for all he was worth.
His parents were glad to be rid of her.
Lucille was rich and on her way.
