Arguably the most handsome alcoholic ever to be elected President, Franklin Pierce was the middle man of the middle nineteenth century, wrong headed Democrat presidential trifecta...between Millard Fillmore and James Buchanan....whose visionary miscalculations led our country smack dab into a Civil War that cost the life of 1 out of every 50 Americans.

Pierce didn't want the nomination of his party and hoped he wouldn't win the Presidency and was astonished when he did. After his victory, Franklin immediately lived down to his expectations and hesitancies.

He embarked to Washingon for his inauguration on one of the saddest train rides in railroad history. His wife, depressed to begin with due to the loss of three of her four sons, went past the breaking point when the derailed and toppled off an embankment near Andover, MA. Franklin and Jane suffered minor injuries, but 11-year-old Bennie was killed in the accident.

He lost his son and the sanity of his wife for a a job that he didn't want in the first place .

The main reason he got elected is because nobody hated him yet , but by the time he left office he was reviled by everybody including his own party.

Prior to his election, the Missouri Compromise had given some hope to the preservation of the Union but thanks to his leadership, the Kansas-Nebraska act was enacted and what a performance it turned out to be. Kansas would be admitted to the "Union" and its status as a slave or free state would be determined by the vote of those who inhabited the territory which caused a tremendous influx of posers who pretended to be Kansans but who were in actuality pro-slavery racists determined to make sure that Kansas would become a pro-slavery state. This resulted in Kansas becoming bloody Kansas with bloodbaths breaking out between actual residents of Kansas and roughnecks shipped in to "represent" the freedom to preserve slavery.

A national disgrace ensued and made the even more polarized country safe for James Buchanan who is widely regarded as one of the few Presidents to be even worse than Pierce.

As a consequence, the country finally got sick of Democrats and elected a Republican. At the time, Republicans were the Democrats of today...the party hated by the South.... and Lincoln was their guy.
