The Lucky One

I suppose I'm on a losing streak.
I haven't had a hit in weeks.
I don't mind the losses. I never risk more than I can afford to lose. Never chose anything 'cept what I wanted to choose.
It's another case of might have been. A jolt of how much I could have won and the good I would have done.
How many times I come up one number, one letter, one paragraph, one idea, one scratch less than I need and I watch another dream bleed into the distance as my confidence begins to wane.
My expectations, Mrs Gargery, fall quite short of great
Estella keeps breaking my heart as she was bred to do.
And all I wanted to do was touch her shoe.
I've walked many a trail alone...always believing that the next one's gonna lead to the promised land and then I rememeber that thanks to the courage of my Grandmother and grandfather who left Cork bag and baggage to come to New York. Everytime I forget that I'm already in the promised land..I do them a disservice.
They came to America.
I've known many people who were given and gave less but have made greater success. Right place, right time. The longshot came in and the trifecta paid off. I don't begrudge them. They help to keep the dream alive.
I keep rolling the dice. I have no other choice and when I win, I win big. I've paid the dues so I've earned the blues. Forgive me while I wait which is as we know the hardest part.
Maybe this is the hit, I've been searching for.... if not the relief of pain in the name of sharing is well worth the time. Before history turns to farce, at least let it rhyme.
And let it ride.
Let it ride another day, another week, another year, another lifetime, another lifeline.
Another stop, another caution, another children crossing sign.
Deal me in, I've already anted up
Give me another taste of that lovin'cup.
In the name of the grandfather his daughter and her son
Although I sometimes lose, I am the lucky one.
