Something About Brad Pitt and Julianne Moore

Brad Pitt is the SOMETHING element in Ad Astra. The movie that surrounds Brad is a slow, contemplative, bundle of improbabilties searching for a father figure to anchor the effort which both Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland fail to do. The film becomes a free fall in outer space, symbolized by the Humpty Dumpty opening in which all the king's horses and men are somehow able to put Brad back together again and shoot him back into space where he confronts improbability after improbability with a composed confidence in his own sanity.
In Gloria Bell, Julianna Moore is the SOMETHING. Moore plays a character who dances the gambit from self-acceptance through the gambit of unexpected romance which turns the dance into a tango with John Turturro which has heartbreak written all over it. Moore ultimately returns to her former state after the tango ends and we expect her to keep on dancin'. This film has no special effects to distract viewers from the character study or the plot both of which are strong enough to sustain interest. Some folks might say that Moore's character represents the problem of middleaged singlehood but I tend to see it as a skillful character study, both engaging and rigorous....a portrait of a twenty first century lady.

I'd forgotten about Gloria
I'd forgotten about Gloria Bell and I'd only seen it recently. Great film that. She produced it, didn't she? A shot for shot remake of the foreign language remake. (While typing that sentence predictive text suggested 'shit', 'fit' and 'foreskin' which about sums up my own writing..)
Anyway, Tom Robinson's just come on the Radio...
