The State of Godzilla

It turned out we weren't quite done with the films of 2019. Lynn decided to purchase a month of HBO, specifically so we could watch the latest in the Godzilla franchise as an alternative counterpoint to watching the State of the Union speech by our "perfect" and beleagured president, Donald J Trump.
As a teevee star, Donald is always aware of his ratings. I wish I had the connections to arrange a boycott of his speech so he could read the ratings and weep but as an actual person, I don't possess those super powers and special effects.
We did what we could.
In an attempt to lower the ratings for the State of the Union, we decided to skip it entirely. Rather we watched Godzilla. While watching the movie, I became aware of how much it must have cost to make this spectacular, quick cut collection of preposterously improbable impossibilities along with how much money was spent by viewers to watch it. Too bad, we couldn't have taken all that money and given it to Cancer research. We marvelled at the actors' ability to emote in front of a green screen and pretend to be happy or sad or amazed or horrified by nothing more than the director's command. We were once again sickened how seemingly millions of people are being destroyed and nuclear bombs are being tossed all over the place while the viewer is supposed to reserve his/her sympathy for one family, the first family as Boston is devastated. I kept thinking that I should turn off this display of bombastic pathos yet found myself rubbernecking the extravagant illusion and falsehoods while resisting the urge to surf to the State of the Union which I figured might be a little superfluous.
If someone handed me a script to this movie, I would tear it up and throw it away.

I watched only one monster
I watched only one monster movie last year. Colossal. And I recommend. About an American woman who finds she is controlling a monster in Korea with her movements....
