Josh knew that Alicia didn't want to see him.
Why should she/ he had treated her abysmally over the two years they
had known each other, even he admitted as much?
He put his mobile back in his pocket, regretted even trying to send a
text and then thought that he might walk over the common to see her.
After all, his two best mates lived fairly near her and if he had a
change of nerve, which secretly he hoped, he could always call in to
see them.
'Never walk across Edson common at night'
He could still hear his departed grand mother's words, delightfully
terrifying him and his sister as she tucked them in to bed with one of
her marvellous ghostly tales. As he walked he wished she could have
written them down, she had the imagination and they were all quite
realistic.
However, tales of monsters, ghosts, soon passed, who believes them
anymore? We love to be terrified and then dismiss it all?why the desire
to be scared?
Josh buttoned up his coat, the September night was not cold but it was
getting that way, and set on along the road.
*
Alicia finished loading the dishwasher and then went back into the
living to join Wayne and Nikki.
'Why don't you go and stay with Emma for a few days?' Asked Nikki 'Or
are you still not talking?'
'She can be boring, she 's no fun anymore' Alicia slumped down into an
armchair and was horrified as it seemed to groan with her weight.
'I'll work it off.ok?' She hated the way her weight went from one
extreme to the other and was desperate to stop Wayne making a comment.
To Alicia, nurses had a tendency to be like the police, always on
duty.
'So.you gonna stay here, even though Lee and Dan still live two streets
away and Josh will always be about?' Nikki, against her better
judgement was returning to the subject.
'I reckon the bastard may be growing up.he hasn't phoned or sent a text
for over a week?'
'Is that unusual?'
'Thank god yes'

The walk was longer than Josh had remembered, and it felt as if it was
starting to rain?he pulled his collar up and was tempted to veer off to
the road to hitch a lift. More raindrops fell, heavier know and he
started to walk faster.

It was late, Wayne and Nikki had left so Alicia, who rarely drank
anyway, got into her car and decided to go for a drive, it was hardly
raining at all and the air smelt fresh as only a night in early
September can. She checked for her rape alarm, her mobile and set
off.

Josh got to the main road and decided to hitch a lift? after a few
minutes a mini van going the other way stopped.
'You are an idiot walking across here' Shouted the driver, 'Two
students were murdered here last year.don't you bloody well
remember?'
Josh did remember but six months can seem a long time.
'I'll turn back and give you a lift to the crossroads but you had
better be quick from there'
Josh accepted the lift silently and gratefully.

Alicia saw the figure in the distance, she would never stop to give
someone a lift, and certainly not on a lonely road such as this one
adjoining Edson common. Though not from the area Wayne had told her on
numerous occasions about it and just after she had bought the house
those two students had been murdered. She recalled the local man
initially arrested but then let off, the killers were still at
large.
As she got closer she recognised the walk of the figure, a youngish
man, tall but with a slight hunch.could it be? Yes bloody hell it
was!
'Where the hell are you going?'
Josh was as stunned to see Alicia as she was he
'Not to see you?'
'This is bloody dangerous! They never caught that killer.no-one walks
here and you being a local too!'
Alicia could not see him walk on alone?should she offer him a lift?
They both looked at each other in silence for what seemed an hour
before Josh decided to walk on. He had only gone for a few steps before
Alicia reversed the car .
'Get in'
'Forget it it's not far'
'It is now get in'
Josh bent down to get in the passenger seat and then Alicia turned the
lights off.
'What?
He only just saw the iron bar swing out from the pit by the gear stick.
Alicia had judged correctly that by the time he saw it he would be
trying to get back. He fell backwards but regained his composure and
tried to run, the blow had only glanced him. With the speed and sure
-footedness that large people often have, Alicia had soon caught up
with him and swung the bar at the centre of his head, he fell to the
ground and did not move. Alicia found herself enjoying her power and
hit him another twice just to make sure.
She then placed the bar back into two plastic carrier bags, took off
her surgical cloves (how stupid of Josh not to notice I was driving
with surgical gloves on!) and drove off.
She felt pleased with herself; she felt such a thrill at ending life,
just like those two stupid German students who were hitchhiking along
here back in the summer. Well, at least now she could move on and that
drip Josh would not bother her gain.

Early the following morning her phone rang
'Alicia it's Wayne..another body has been found. I don't like you
living near that common on your own'
'Oh I love it here Ed, I think I'll stay a while'
