The Lord Of The Maze

It is for centuries that I have sat here.
I cannot recall a time when I was not in this maze.
I am happy, though, in my kingdom. I can wander as I please, there is
always some new passage, doorway, to explore and my feeding
requirements are easily met. My gaolers ensure that my intake of meat
is satisfied, for I am a carnivore and there is nothing quite like the
succulent taste of human meat. Of course pigs and cattle satisfy me too
but it is the delivery of humans every few months that I enjoy the
most.
These poor unfortunates know nothing of where I am; they are forced in
to the maze and soon lose track of where they are.
I give a few loud bellows and cries in order to disorientate them and
then wait for panic to set in. I then begin my trek and hunt them down.
It is a game I draw out to fulfil my intense excitement. The thrill of
the hunt is often more pleasurable than the kill itself.
One year there was a particularly astute young man who avoided me for
two whole days. He managed to sleep little and had a remarkable ear for
the slightest sound. I even began to tire of the chase and hoped that
he would perish through starvation but I eventually caught him. The
need for sleep had become so necessary he nodded off in a corner that I
had comer to know so I surprised him. I enjoyed the feast that night,
for here was a definite challenge that I had overcome.
I am now awaiting the next delivery of humanity but this time I have an
idea that things are going to be different. Do not ask why I believe
this, for there is no adequate explanation. It is just that I know
somehow that this time will be a challenge. Perhaps it is the need for
excitement that wills me to contemplate this, perhaps it is boredom or
maybe it is I brooding too much.
I am sleeping, but am awakened by footsteps and the wails of women.
They are here again; I shall wait a moment before commencing my task
and first I will cry out.
I hear someone near me; they cannot have come this far so soon! I turn
to see a young man with a ball of wool and a sword. He speaks:
'I am Theseus, and I have come to kill you Minotaur'.
