It Wasn’t Supposed To Happen Like This
December 13, 2017
“It’s her heart.”
Nurses and physicians descended,
feverishly working over her frail body.
Monitor alarms blared.
Her heart’s failing.
Medications, IVs, blood samples.
Personnel came and went
like a well-rehearsed drill team.
“Stable, yet observe for now.”
“It’s a routine procedure,”
but something went horribly wrong.
Like a blown fuse,
Death, a pacemaker’s missed-pulse away.
Never was it supposed to happen like this.
You were the healthy one.
But now you’re
tethered to a bed,
heartrate too high for
Maybe doctors will have answers and
maybe medications could help, then
maybe an “I’m sorry” would ease the pain,
maybe but not likely said.
Each day’s a new adventure.
In my wildest dreams,
it wasn’t supposed to happen this way.
But it did, and
I’ll stand by you no matter what.

Apprehension, despondency, fear.
“Beating on its own”
Words sink in.
Hoped for words.
Prayed for words.
Pacemaker now tracking, not pacing, and
medication for heartrate.
Prognosis: normality, soon.
The routine of life, isn’t it grand? And
making New Year Resolutions is pure joy.
What a difference
ten days make.
The heart is
accidental combination of slime, not!
our favorite restaurant with
eyes bright blue,
“I didn’t get you anything for Christmas.”
“This is the best gift, ever, Babes.”
giving thanks to Him for
another Christmas together.
