There was once a boy who always got a B or C average at school, and never straight A’s. He studied hard at times, but seldom saw an A on his report card. The higher echelons of learning seemed out of his reach. In sport he also faired average, and always wound in the B Team in football, and was never chosen for the first team. He dreamt of being captain of the A Side, but it remained only a dream. But what he desired most was a gold medal in sprinting, and this too, always evaded him. He had to be content with a bronze or a silver. ‘It is not if you win or lose, but how you play the game’ he was taught. That was small comfort for someone who was never able to win the gold, no matter how hard he tried. The years went past and he wound up in an average job, with an average family. Those high school days were long gone and life had moved on. One day he was having a few drinks with an old friend at the local casino, and they were talking about the old days. How he wished in his heart that he could have won the gold medal back in the day. He still longed for that feeling of ultimate victory after all those years. He sighed to himself, and decided to take a few spins at the machines, although he wasn’t much of a gambler. He sat there and fed the machine a few coins, and it only took several spins of the wheel, before the machine and the lights started going crazy. The machine kept spitting out money, and he had hit the jack pot. He couldn’t believe his luck. It was true that he had never won the gold medal, but when you’re filthy rich, who’s really complaining. The top of the podium comes to all who wait.
