How to Peel a Potato
Wet the knife and draw the dripping blade,
around the golden orb until the curling
slither of skin falls into the bowl beneath,
revealing a strip of creamy flesh.
Wet the blade once more – and repeat,
each time turning the potato
in your hand – just slightly.
And with each slice admire
the sunlight flashing on the steel,
listen to the whispered scrape,
and the music of each gentle splash,
and let it take you where it may,
to Timbuktoo perhaps or maybe Mandalay,
or dare I hope occasionally,
it brings me back to you - and you to me.
