It's About (for St. George's Day)
It’s about bowling a maiden over,
appreciating the skill of a tight-head prop,
remembering nineteen sixty six,
knowing what Roger Bannister did.
It’s not about a hooligan’s prowess on the terraces.
It’s about Shakespeare and the Beatles,
appreciating a painting by Constable,
remembering what happened at Dunkirk,
knowing what Charles Darwin discovered.
It’s not about exposing yourself on a rowdy night out.
It’s about curry after a few beers,
appreciating a plate of bangers and mash,
remembering what happened to Robert Falcon Scott,
knowing what Poppy Day is all about.
It’s not about drinking yourself stupid in a foreign bar.
It’s about the freedom of democracy,
appreciating the vagaries of the weather,
remembering when we last won the ashes,
knowing what ‘Last Night of the Proms’ celebrates.
It’s not about being White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant.
It’s about simple pride in your country,
appreciating your neighbour’s difference,
remembering your grandparents’ sacrifice,
knowing your children are citizens of the world.
It’s about being an Englishman.
