Hi all! Please, call me Red!

I’m a geeky scribbler with a love of satire, comedy, parody, history and Steampunk/Victoriana. My pronouns are she/her.

Authors I love, and who have been my greatest influences, include Terry Pratchett, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Douglas Adams, Sue Townsend, Oscar Wilde, Dante Alighieri, Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.

I hugely appreciate constructive feedback on all of my work, as well as general polite interaction from readers. It always makes my day. So please, don’t be shy!

Plus, if you do enjoy my work, please consider sharing it!

  • One in a Minion (removed for redrafting/editing - may be back one day!)

Fleetwood has only ever known one way of life - the life of an evil minion. He is one of thousands employed by megalomaniac supervillain The Great One. Forced to wear a mask, he spends his days using his superpowers to help his boss take over the world.

The only problem is.... Fleetwood really wants to be a good guy.

While one of his Fleetwood's best friends, Redmond, can understand his unhappiness, his other, more mischievous best friend, Malvolio (also known as "Mally"), loves his life of villainy and relishes every moment. As for his employer - well, let's just say the penalty for desertion is very strict.

Meanwhile, LAFTAW - the Localised Agents Fighting Toughly to Alleviate Wrongdoing - are determined to put a stop to The Great One's plans. Secret agents Indigo Maxwell and Idris Carew are on the case, working under the watchful eye of the "Chief", Ms. Phoenix, who has a long history with the evil overlord.

When Fleetwood crosses paths with the LAFTAW agents, his life is changed forever. However, it seems that he is not the only person wanting more out of life, and the ambitions of another will lead to revolution, rivalries, and a great battle between good and evil.

  • Grimm Truths

Why would anyone want a queen’s first-born baby? What if the Pied Piper went platinum? At their roots, fairy tales are bleak and brutal. Those who wish that their life was more like a fairy tale would be shocked to find, should their wish be granted, that the reality they rejected was nowhere near as bad. Even if things turned out for the best, they’d still have a heck of a hard time getting to their “Happily Ever After”. That’s the case with the characters we hear from in this collection. Through a mixture of poetry and prose - with altered perspectives, settings and contexts - readers will experience new twists and takes on classic tales that are both humorous and moving.

  • The Huxley Letters

A Steampunk romance/adventure story, born out of roleplay letters with a friend. The noble-born Lady Clara Huxley, trapped in a miserable marriage, longs to escape through travel. Through her various voyages on the airship Aurora with her loyal crew, new worlds are opened up to her in more ways than one. However, some things still anchor her to her tragic past.Clara confides in an American acquaintance through a series of letters, detailing both her global travels, and her life’s journey.

  • Inferno Revisited

A series of verses inspired by Dante’s Inferno / The Divine Comedy, exploring modern-day issues in relation to the circles of Hell - crafted in accordance with the terza rima scheme and iambic pentameter. Themes explored include gluttony, greed, profiting from faith and homophobia. Please note some topics are of a highly sensitive nature. Reader discretion is advised.

  • Other Original Works

A range of miscellaneous poetry, one-off stories and other works are also available for your reading pleasure.

Thank you all for stopping by! Have an amazing day!

Beautiful Things

Despite my recent hymn to body positivity, “Metamorphosis” - which I still stand by - my ongoing body confidence journey still has its wobbles, all the same. My low self-esteem as of late, along with the prompt "what beauty means to you", inspired this quick poem. (Image from Pixabay - free to use)

Letters to CHIP: Santa Claus

An older piece from 2013, and the sequel to the previous CHIP letter from the Easter Bunny. With Christmas just around the corner, Mr. Claus writes a letter to the Council of Holiday and Imaginary Personifications (CHIP), in order to respond to Mr. Floppington's concerns. PG due to the piece's nature and humour, which may make it unsuitable for younger readers. [Image from Pixabay - free to use]

Flash Fiction Friday: Minions Unite!

A piece written for a Flash Fiction Friday prompt on Tumblr, with the theme of "Stronger Together", and set in the universe of my ongoing novel "One in a Minion". Any villain's underlings work better when they work as one. (Image by Dave Photoz, taken from Unsplash: https://unsplash.com/photos/BDIFIT1ILDs )

Flash Fiction Friday - Stay With Me

A piece written for a Flash Fiction Friday prompt on Tumblr, with the theme of "Stay With Me", and inspired by my collection "Grimm Truths". Even fairytales have their fair share of heartbreak, betrayal and abandonment. (Image from Wikimedia Commons - in public domain)
