Can Creativity Be Taught

Radio 4's usually abysmal 'Something Understood' programme was, last night, actually a quite interesting discussion about teaching poetry by Professor Douglas Dunn (who I don't know from a hole in the ground).

Anyway, I thought some of you people might be interested and if you have a computer up to the job you can listen to it by going here and clicking on the 'listen again' link.

I often find my self curiously surprised by the ability of creative expression to plunge me in to some dark and unexplored region of my own hidden emotions. That last piece, 'Forget me not by Hardy'; brought a tear to my eyes. Regardless of whether its a painting, a musical compilation or written expression, I feel the power of creative expression can only be informed by life's experiences in them selves. But that creativity is within all of us, awaiting lives experiences to give reason for that expression. Why that last peace was able to effect my emotions so, i will probably never understand. But some thing inside me senses that the sentiment carried within its innermost expression, could only have come from the deepest understanding of its composer life experience's and not some thing that can be taught to a person, by another person.
