Not quite happy, not quite miserable

from the ABC set What Jennifer Wrote Next (pre-2004)

Not quite happy, not quite miserable

I cross the road in the sunshine
Feeling not quite happy, not quite miserable,
Just hovering in between the two
Like love once did between me and you,
I don't look back,
It's hard but it's a matter of pride,
I don't let falter creep into my stride,
My chin is high,
Shoulders weighted heavily:
Freedom - it's a burden,
Responsibility only for me;
I don't like to be alone,
I didn't want to walk like this so soon,
Feeling cold under a sunny afternoon.

Letting go was like unwrapping sticky fingers
From around a handful of flour;
Saying goodbye was painful and I've been clingy,
Hogging your answerphone, stalking you home,
Drowned in bitterness, unripe lemon-sour.

But today, chance meeting in the street and it's all over,
Even I could see that what was hovering between us
Was nothing like love - there was just space and memories
And, looking at your face, I wanted to ask you
If you feel the weight, the weight of being free.
