Belvedere is
one of the poshest localities in all of Calcutta. A lot of
industrialists live here in the company of actors and corporate
bigwigs. Anyone who wishes to climb the social ladder wants to live
here. There are no shops in this area. You can go to the nearest market
after a ten minute drive from Belvedere. The nearest college is in
Esplanade and it takes half an hour to reach there. There is however a
kindergarten school in the area. It is called 'Bells'. This school is
run by Mrs Lily Roy whose husband has a security agency. Bells is
situated near Bonnie Park, a huge facility where little children can
play all kinds of games. There is the see-saw, the swing, the
merry-go-round any many other things in the park all of which the
children absolutely love. Bells has classes from nine to twelve in the
morning with a break at ten-thirty. During the fifteen minute break the
children play in the park under supervision of the teachers.
14th. In India this day is celebrated as
children's day. The children had been asked to come to school in 'good'
clothes. It is quite another thing that the students of Bells come from
affluent families and are always in good clothes. Nevertheless the
children were all wearing attractive clothes. Nursery 1 has two
divisions. Division A has sixty students. Wendy is a student of
division A. Wendy's father is in the Merchant style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Navy and is away
sailing six months a year. Her father has arrived in Calcutta just day
before yesterday and she is naturally very happy. As Wendy's class
teacher Miss Dorothy looked at her pupils she was pleased. All her
students were wearing beautiful clothes. It was a good day to take the
class photograph. She sent for Bob, the school photographer and began
taking attendance. Wendy, whose roll number was 60 was the only student
who was not present. This made Dorothy sad for Wendy was a bright and
cheerful girl. Very soon Bob arrived with his camera. The chairs were
removed and all the children were made to pose for the camera. As the
last photograph was being taken the recess bell rang. It was then that
little Wendy walked in wearing a beautiful lilac dress.
class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Miss Dorothy spoke to
Wendy, 'You know today is children's day. You were supposed to come on
time.' Wendy flashed a brilliant smile. 'But Madam, SRK is in town'.
Dorothy said, 'Who on earth is SRK.' 'He is india's biggest movie
star.', said Wendy. 'Well what about that, young lady?' 'I had to see
him', retorted Wendy. 'Why are you late for school.' Wendy adjusted her
tie and began, 'SRK had come to our area. But when I was ready to meet
him he had already left. So my Dad took me on a cycle to Dalhousie where he was
shooting. But he was on his way to Dacres Lane by then. My Dad borrowed a
car and drove me to Dacres Lane. But SRK was boating on the Ganges with
his wife. My Dad borrowed a boat and crossed the Ganges to Hora. When
we got down from the boat at Hora SRK had left for Bombay in his
private jet. So my Dad borrowed an aeroplane from the aerodrome. We
followed SRK to Jessore. While we were flying over Jessore I looked
through the window of the plane. SRK's plane was passing by and I saw
him combing his hair. Because I wanted to see SRK I was late to
school.'
Miss
Dorothy found herself smiling. 'You do have an imaginative mind Wendy.
Now lets go and play.'
