The Party Prank - For Inspiration Point

from the ABC set Poetry & Song Lyrics

At a joke shop, I bought a large rubber spider,
attached to a piece of elastic string.
I thought it might be fun to take
and scare people at a family gathering.

All my cousins thought it was cool,
Although all the girls squealed and ran.
We chased them around with it for a while
but then decided we needed a bolder plan.

We made a decision to hang it outside,
over the path to the outdoor loo.
That way we could hide on top of the shed
where we’d all have a really good view.

All the adults were kneeing-up inside,
while on the roof, we waited patiently.
Soon enough, out came loud Aunt Beryl,
looking desperate for a wee.

She clip-clopped down the garden path,
her wobbly shoes were definitely on.
We snickered and shushed each other
because we knew it wouldn’t be long.

As she neared the dangling prank,
I gave the string a mighty tug.
The spider danced in Beryl’s face
but she waved it away like a bug.

Then the string holding the spider snapped;
we thought it was the end of our fun.
But what happened next was way better
than anything we could have planned or done.

Beryl was wearing her red party dress,
A favourite she’d had for years.
The spider fell between her ample breasts,
bringing life to her arachnophobic fears.

She let out a massive scream
and pulled her dress up over her head.
The spider fell out on the ground
where Beryl proceeded to stomp it dead.

But as she stomped, the spider bounced,
Causing her to stomp and scream even more.
By this time those inside had heard
and were gathering at the back screen door.

They all stood there, in a state of shock,
I can’t imagine what they thought.
We were laughing so hard and loud,
I felt sure we were about to get caught.

There was Beryl, with her fineries showing,
not knowing the whole party could see,
running around in a tizzied state,
Then she ran, smack bang, into a tree.

Well, the bump on her head was quite large,
but not near as large as her shame,
and we all pretended to fell remorse
for our silly, childish and misfortunate game.

Now you might wonder if we were punished,
the truth is we were, sort of, kinda’,
but the prank made the party more memorable,
the night Beryl tried to kill a rubber spider.

It's a great story - but the metre keeps going off. Try reading it out loud!

Thanks for this, Tony. The metre is off because I rushed it. I am hoping to go back and correct it this weekend, when I have more time.

I agree with Tony - this is really funny, but if it 'scanned' perfectly it would be even better!

A friend of mine tortured me for years with tomato tops and real spiders. I got my own back once with a snake a teacher had brought in for a talk. Revenge was sweet!

Jen, thanks so much for your comment. I agree with both you and Tony but unfortunately have had little time to amend this piece (or even respond to any commentary). Hopefully, this will change soon enough. In the meantime, I appreciate your advice.
