In London
There’s a man
Reading the paper on a side street
And it displays what he can already see
With his own eyes
London is burning again
From Tottenham to Hackney
But this is worse than 1981
This is worse than the great fire
Because does anyone know what they’re rioting for? No
“Gorilla’s” he states
And his were the higher stakes
A family run business
You can see the pain on his face
They burn to hurt the governors
But they hurt the human race
They burn down their own offices
Delivering their own fate
Upon fate
Upon fate
Little children
Unemployed
Still have their benefits
The council homes
Have central heating
Unlike the slums of Mumbai
Or the homes in Paraguay
All I can succumb is
They want free stuff
They think, “The Prime Ministers
Away, Mayors gone on holiday
Let’s go out and freak
And make a fray”
London’s burning
And I’m not talking about buildings
I’m talking about people
Who can’t identify
Those who can’t understand
What they’re going crazy for
They say the tax is high
The cuts are astounding
Cameron’s getting high in Tuscany
Or something
Get some respect
Or some of the organs you haven’t got yet
If you really want to make a difference
Words
Not deeds
Changed yesterday
And now
Because of you
Yesterdays nearer than it ever was
Today
You can burn down what you like
And this is all I can say
I understand you have liberties
So its my liberty to say
Fools for a common cause gave us what we have today
And you fools without a cause
Show you cant slander human nature
Its worse than words can say
When Boudicca burnt down Londinium
She died that day
And though it took many years
London was rebuilt
And she still stands today
Well
I hope she stands
Anyway.

Thank you. Yes, it was indeed an ugly moment. Inspired by your perspective though, I must say.

Ephraim - well said.
Having been born and raised in Tottenham...moving on to a council house in South London, incidentally, I have been totally appalled and saddened, as have we all, as to the recent terrible events.
By the way, my late daughter travelled quite extensively in India...Mumbai especially, and the comparison you make, so eloquently,in your poem, rings very true.
