The Answer

from the ABC set Poems For Cyril

Arthur didn't believe it,
when the answer came:
'it's only 6 times 7,
so it isn't even prime.'

It's the best age for a mid-
life car-crash ; someone
walks away and not always
the driver in worst cases.

It's twice twenty-one, which
used to bring the key
of the door to adulthood
- but we use the windows now.

Yet there's always truth in
numbers and this one
is the aver-”age” time
a street person has.

Gosh, Ewan...that last stanza, so unexpected right up until the last line (having read the penultimate one twice). And then, smiling, I read to the end. I wasn't smiling anymore.

Clever;-)
