Rational Proof?

Tick, tock, tick, tock: ignore the workings of the clock,
as if a repeater on a chain, is proof and positive evidence plain
the watchmaker exists in the here and now,
as well use the bullock as proof of the plough.
Not so, not so: what we sense is what we know:
the fortunate chance of intellect,
deserves at least a little respect
- if not then we are faith's holiest fools,
mesmerised by solipsistical schools.
And when we meet them, our fellow fortunate sapients
in the long beyond, shaped by rare and random events
as mysterious to us, as ours must surely seem to them,
will a polished pebble hold the value of the brightest gem?
