The 10 things we talk about when we talk about love

from the ABC set Safety goggles must be worn at all times

1.CONSEQUENCES
Jonathon Cope,
Age 16,

met Gemma Taylor,
age 15,

in the reference section of Birmingham Library.

2.MUSIC
He said: oh I’m scared of the middle place, between life and not knowing
She said: Hope there’s someone who’ll take care of me, nights to hold, when I’m tired

3.POETRY
‘The very early universe, which is still poorly understood, was the split second in which the universe was so hot that particles had energies higher than those currently accessible.’

The hardboard screen between us:
an Egyptian veil in raqs sharqi.
Its’ opacity channelling my eyes
to the crown of his fascinating head.
I want to unbuckle the screen,
open it like a gate, push my lips
to it’s cold splintered wood.

A cynic would say it was coincidence
that we should both became aware
of the dimness, both reach absent-mindedly,
fingers scurrying across, spider-like,
to the silver box between us with LIGHT
engraved onto it, where both hands, ringless,
would soon collide, like the first clumsy planets
that hurled matter in all directions.

4.EACH OTHER
Then I was like : -)
And he was like : - >
And I was like ; - )
And he was like ; - >

Then I was like : - O hang on – is that a book about Fox Hunting

And he was like yeah - but you’re reading Eliot
And I was like yes and your point is?
And he was like he’s anti-Semitic
And I was like duh – that’s different

Than he was like I’ll think you’ll find it’s not actually

And I was like you’ve changed
And he was like, excuse me?
And I was like I don’t even know you anymore
And he was like what do you mean

Then I was like, this ain’t working no more

And he was like, you don’t mean that
And I was like I think you’ll find I do
And he was like, but you knew I liked foxhunting
And I was like, yeah, well that was three minutes ago.

5.NOTHING
What’re you thinking? Talk to me.
I have nothing to say to you, nothing.

6.REGRET
I wish I’d never come.
I wish I’d never sat opposite you.

Awesomely brilliant. I love it. You've made my Valentine's Day with this - just as my wife fell down the stairs and twisted her ankle. It happened as I read it.

No way! God I hope she's OK. I will write no more about love if this is the effect.

She's OK - now recumbent upon the sofa with a large cup of tea, her Valentine's Day chocolates, arnica cream upon her tightly bandaged ankle and an excuse to watch Richard and Judy (it's her secret vice). Write on - and maybe Richard and Judy will fall down the stairs!

This is just brilliant. I don't have anything more critical or wordy-wordy to say, sorry. Brilliant...

Now that would be something! The last time I wrote a poem like this Judy's boobs fell out of her top. It was quite the scandal of the TV Awards.

Hejira j - who needs wordy-wordy when you have said it is brilliant. That is more than enough. Thank you.
