Day of Reckoning

from the ABC set Refelections on Life

Slow grown from a fiery birth
to become a cradle of life
amidst endless empty worlds

She has mothered multitudes
who lived and died within her remit,
maintaining her delicate balance.

Then came her youngest,
the devourer of worlds,
the child of insatiable appetites,

Who has, in the blink
of a cosmic eye
ravaged her to the edge of extinction.

But now her silent suffering
is coming to an end.
Our day of reckoning is at hand.
