His name was Peter, but no one
ever called him that.
At best they called him by his surname
as if he was somehow less than them.
Mostly it was “Goofy”...“Teethy”...“Dracula”.
“John’s brother” from the teachers,
when he wasn’t “Paul’s brother” that is.
His father introduced him as his “number three”,
to both his parents he was part of “the boys”.
His brothers that much older, Peter was ‘part’ of nothing.
Peter was only ten; he’d already disappeared.

Our daughter always says why can't I have
a brother or sister She always is my number one.
