I shut my eyes, an image comes
An image comes unbidden,
Pictures play inside my mind
Of things I wish were hidden.
I sense a brooding presence
Within its darksome hole,
For now it feeds my terror
It will soon feed on my soul.
This horror in the shadows
In ceaseless vigil waits,
I fear it is the guardian
Of Satan's hellish gates.
Yet I am no sinner
I've done no evil deeds,
I've placed no foot upon the path
Which to damnation leads.
I live quietly 'mongst my fellows
Doing harm to none,
I'm sure my night-time terrors
Aren't caused by ought I've done.
Yet why am I so certain
My dreams from Hell are sent?
How can I seek forgiveness
If I've nothing to repent?
Each night when I shut my eyes
The beast draws ever near,
The rasping of its fetid breath
I can already hear.
My eyes slip shut, I must not sleep
Six nights I've stayed awake,
Satan's beast is waiting
My soul at last to take.

His eyes are shut, no image comes
Alas none ever will,
Beware the beast who prowls your dreams
The fear he brings can kill.
