OCEAN

from the ABC set THE WORLD ABOUT ME

Waves break on a sandy shore
In a ceaseless seasaw motion,
In & out, and in & out
A heartbeat in the ocean.

The sea looks kind and gentle
Lapping gently on the beach,
But hidden in its darkest depths
Is a strength we cannot reach.

That blueness so inviting
On a peaceful summer's day
Can turn to dark forbidding waves
Of water leaden grey.

Though the sea will oftime suffer us
To play within its fringe,
Its on its own uncertain terms
Our relations with it hinge.

While it slumbers peacefully
This beast composed of water,
Remember with no thought or care
It can turn its hand to slaughter.

Though man may claim dominion
Of all things growing on this earth,
He must bow before the ocean
That ultimately spawned his birth.

of the three you posted today, this is my favourite, the ocean is fickle,indifferent,beautiful and terrible all at the same time,:-}

Much like myself - apart from the beautiful bit. Seriously though, thanks for the comment, I wrote this more than 20 years ago when my poetry had a gentler edge. Oh by the way ..... HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
