The Train Journey

from the ABC set Poetry

As I journey on a train,
The world goes streaming by,
The scenery's not beautiful,
It makes me want to cry.

The sky is grey and overcast,
The trees are bare and brown,
Fields and rivers are empty,
There goes a dreary town.

The darkness of a tunnel,
Is almost a welcome break,
But on the other side it's raining,
This is more than I can take.

I close my eyes but not to sleep,
I wish myself away,
The world is getting uglier,
It worsens everyday.

Try the line from Newton Abbot to Totnes, or, failing that, Watford Junction to Birmingham - most of it (up to about Marston Green anyway) is much nicer than this!
