Sonnet One

from the ABC set Once Upon A Time On A Small Island

I see us. Lips locked in loves first embrace.
We break apart reluctantly. Clasp hands.
Walk on slowly, my eyes locked on your face.
I follow. Through the market's heaving stands.
They see none of it. I see none of it.
I can see his love for me, clear as light.
His delight in my fast tongue, my quick wit.
And I, behind, know this is our last night.
We savour it, flying across the ground.
With interlocked hands and interlocked hearts.
Together, Elysium can be found.
Our lost love punctures my skin like a dart.
What once was is lost. Just a memory.
But to my broken heart, it is the key.
