Sun, sea, sex and sangria wasn't that what holidays were all about, not
for Alice. Holidays were about being left while your friends went off
with various blokes and burning your legs so badly you could barely sit
down. Now sat watching everyone else enjoying themselves she was ready
to cry.
"All by yourself" the voice was smooth and loud, booming down on Alice
from above, looking up her eyes meet the two dark pools of Aaron.
"Apparently so" she looked around in a sarcastic manner and then fixed
her hazel eyes on his again.
"Where are Em and Fay?" he seated himself next to her on the picnic
bench, so now they were facing each other.
"With some blokes I assume".
"What about dancing?".
"By myself no thanks".
"With me".
Now Alice looked at his delicate features fully and thought again what
she'd thought all week how she'd love to be kissed by that deep red
mouth, feel its heat, its passion. She shook her head it was a thought
she could not allow herself, "No, thanks anyway".
"Come on it wont kill you" now he had hold of her hand and was dragging
her off the seat and on to the dance floor.
"I . . ." but it was useless and instead she concentrated on his hand
in hers, slightly sweaty but gripping hard.
Out on the crowded dance floor couples where kissing and Alice felt
awkward like the whole world was watching her, laughing at the poor fat
girl who's got no friends, so the rep takes pity on her. She
concentrated on feeling the music and not watching his face.
Was it her imagination or was he getting closer, moving slowly but
surly closer so their bodies would soon be pressed together it he
didn't stop. Surely not, but yes, she felt his hand on her bare arm
then his lips almost but not quite touching her ear, the words tickled
as he spoke, she didn't know what he said, it didn't matter, she could
feel the heat, the sexually charged air, no her imagination again.
Please let it be my imagination Alice breathed. Every part of her body
began to sweat, she could feel it forming on her top lip, feel it
beginning to run down the crease in her back.
"I think I'll go".
"What" again he was close, too close.
"I'm going".
"Why".
"I", she couldn't explain, she just turned and pushing her way through
the crowd was soon out into the open air.
"Let me walk you home".
"There's no need". She could feel him walking along beside her but
could no bare to turn and look.
"I can't have you walking home alone what if something happened to you.
I'd never forgive myself".
"I'll be fine" now Alice upped her pace, to shake him, but Aaron wasn't
to taking no for an answer.
"Ok, I'll just walk along behind you then". Alice ignored him for over
a minute hoping he would go away, but finally when he showed no signs
of going she slowed allowing him to walk next to her. They made a
strange couple, total silence between then and a large gap like neither
wanted to be seen with the other.
Just before the hotel lay a leafy street with palm trees and beautiful
red flowers, lining the pavement. As they walked dodging the drooping
flowers, he picked one haphazardly and tried to place it in her hair.
Alice flinched at his touch, turning now facing him boldly not caring,
"Why are you doing this".
"What",
"Being like this, what is it some kind of joke, are they all going to
jump out in a minute and laugh at the stupid fat girl", she was
slightly out of breath, not releasing how much she was shouting.
"I don't know what you're talking about".
"Or is it in your job description, be nice to even the most ugly of
guests".
"Alice your not fat or ugly".
"Now I know your lying" she began to stalk off, but Aaron was not going
to let her speak to him like that then exit with a flourish, anyway he
had 50 quid riding on it.
"Alice I think your lovely", he caught up to her taking her firmly by
both arms, he spun her so now they were facing and again he saw how
pretty she actually was huge hazel green eyes and a lush plum mouth
just waiting to be kissed. Ok so she could do with shedding a few
pounds but really this bet wasn't going to be as bad as he first
thought. "You're neither ugly or fat, your beautiful, I've been
thinking about kissing your sun tanned body all week". Not strictly
true he rather fancied her friend but poetic license was allowed. Still
she looked suspicious but she no longer tried to struggle from his
grasp. Now for all the well worm clich?s he could think of. "I think I
could get lost in your eyes" he moved his hand to her face, surely
Alice thought, surely he wouldn't kiss . . . he did. She tired to
savour every moment but it was over all to quickly "I think your great
you stand up for what you want and you always get it, I love strong
women". No one had ever called Alice strong, not in the 21 years she'd
been on the planet. Suddenly she stood high, held her head up, she
couldn't believe what one kiss could do to her, one nice word for a
gorgeous man. "Let's get back to the apartments". He placed the flower
behind her ear, and kissed her again. Now as they walked towards the
hotel, he held her hand almost crushed her fingers in his grip but
Alice didn't care she was the happiest she'd every been.
At the apartment door, Alice paused ready to say goodbye, he kissed
her again and this time she tasted every moment, his tongue woven with
hers, his lips tasting of vodka and the smell of his aftershave.
"So don't I get an invite in".
"Shouldn't you get back".
"No one will miss me".
"But . . ." this was the crucial moment make or brake, 50 quid in his
pocket or 50 quid out of pocket. He knew a kiss would sway her and no
sooner had he placed his lips on hers he felt her body melt under his.
Pushing her against the door he felt himself tensing. "Aaron I . .
."
"I know you want me, your mouth may be telling me no but your whole
body is saying yes".
"I don't know".
"Just a drink for walking you home".
"Ok" at this moment Alice felt herself falling, falling for what she
was, to a new self, maybe her real self that had been hiding deep down
all along.
"well goodbye then, see you all at the reunion, have a good trip
home". Three days had passed and Alice had neither seen much of Aaron
or wanted to, now as they all stood saying good-bye at the door he
hugged each girl individually. As he got to Alice, she like to think
that maybe her hug was that little bit longer, but who can tell.
And that's it, there is nothing else to be said, I'm sure the
romantics amongst you would like to hear how Aaron realised really he
loved our heroine, how he ran after her in the airport declaring
undying love. But I'm sorry, I deal in real life not in romantic
fantasy. He went back to the hotel and found another girl, and another
and another. Nothing more is needed except to say Alice never bent her
head again or let people walk all over her. What Aaron did without
knowing that night was restore the self confidence of a young girl so
bruised by this cruel life.
