The Brave New Homes Of Farrington
By Paul McCann
They deserted their homes in Farrington and burnt them down
smoke and flames leapt to the sky and ashes lay on the ground.
Some tradesmen stepped inro the breach to rebuilt them again .
and worked for nothing in the snow and wind and pouring rain .
Some local building suppliers donated free of charge
The spirit was willing and all the labourers were large.
Well who else but a brickie would build up a house for you
with blisters on his blisters and a back near broke in two.
The bricks were brought and laid to rest and soon the mortar set .
Labourers pushed barrows with their aces covered in sweat.
Plumbers got the lead out and now it was full steam ahead /
These days its all copper which makes the water soft instead .
Its a plumbers plight to be digging down in ditches deep,
putting in new sewerage pipes and fixing the dripping leak..
Many hands made light work of and everybody tried
with wires of many colours on a one way ticket ride.
Bless the brickies, sparks and the plumbers and labourers as well ,
who rebuilt the gutted houses for new people to dwell .
