Prologue

Do you always know what you are running away from?
Don’t you sometimes feel like you just want to hide from what’s happened, even if you don’t know what exactly it means for you or if it is the truth that bothers you?
Have you ever yearned for love you can never have?
Words on a page; meaningless? What you said to me; meaningless? Our whole lives; meaningless?
Isn’t it so much easier to say it’s someone else’s fault rather than conduct a painful breakdown of our own follies? When has taking responsibility for our own actions ever helped matters?
It’s human nature. We were born to live, and so our primary instinct is to preserve ourselves.
We speak incessantly about friendship, family, bonds and love. But the truth is, if you and your family were trapped inside a burning building, you would bolt outside with no thoughts formulated, then later look around, worry and contemplate whether your family had made it.
I know this sounds cruel and selfish and you are probably at this very minute hatching counter-arguments to use against me. I cannot blame you. You have never been there.
But I have.
