It was a day of my first year in Engineering. It was 1:40 in the afternoon. I had my lunch a few minutes ago. I locked my room and started for the workshop. I felt very sad. It was a long and boring two hour workshop. We were given two thick metal plates which we had to rub with the help of a filer till it is of the specified width. I use to fell very tired after that two hour period. When it ended I just came into my room and slept for two hours.
Before we started our weekly task, attendance was taken. It was a custom. All the students were habituated to it. It was taken just to keep track of the things we took so that we could return it at the end of the period. A filer was taken by me. I went to the specified place and started filling. I filed, filed. The filer that I got was not good enough. I had no option but to file the metal piece as all filers were distributed . I used to find this period very boring and tiring. If I was the person who had the responsibility to make changes then I had removed the workshop from the syllabus. I thought it was of no use for our branch students. Every time I went into the workshop I felt very sad. I frequently checked the time in my watch.
Finally the bell rang. A student came from our class and told everybody to deposit the filer to him. I was a fool to give him the filer. That was my mistake. I should not have given him the filer. Everybody moved to the other room where the attendance would be taken again.
The workshop superintendent started taking attendance. Whenever the name of the student was called, he/she went to him and gave their filer. His/her name was crossed in the attendance sheet. I was terrified. Now my name was called. I told him that a student told to give him the filer. That’s why I gave him the filer. The superintendent was not ready to hear a single word. I thought I had to pay a fine. Then a series of thoughts followed. I looked sad and worried.
The superintendent told me to stand aside. He told me that he would talk to me after the attendance. I stood in a side. A student from my class came to me and asked me why I gave the filer to the student. I stood aside and started thinking what would happen. After sometime a student came and gave me a filer and told me to give the filer to the superintendent. Now I felt a little relifed. I gave the filer to the superintendent. My name was crossed in the attendance sheet. I was happy now. I thanked him.
This time god came in the form of a friend. There is a proverb “A friend in need is a friend in deed”. At that time the proverb was hundred percent true.
